This September, Swedish fashion brand Monki celebrates ten years of offering Scandi-cool-meets-Asian-street-style fashion, an exciting store experience and a colourful personality. At the heart of the big one-oh party is a collection showing the very core of Monki design.
The AW16 anniversary collection picks up the brand’s design DNA and develops it into an indication of the future. Head of Design Caroline Carlryd and her team have taken key Monki elements to a new fashion level, creating a carefully crafted, limited collection bowing to the past—and looking towards the future.
“We are celebrating our first decade as a brand, and what better way than to cut to the core of Monki design and celebrate the things we have brought to the retail landscape,” says Monki Head of Design Caroline Carlryd. “And to make a declaration for the future: this collection shows our soul. This is what we love.”
The first element: the signature Monki silhouette. Combining oversized garments, beautiful lines and contrasting elements like cropped trousers, the collection highlights the play on proportions that always makes up the first double helix in the Monki style DNA. The second element: prints. In the anniversary collection, oversized monki feet and doodles combine fun with sophistication. The third element: a walk down memory lane. A colour palette old Monki fans are sure to know and love, deep mustards, rich blues and plenty of black to set it off.
Key garments are the chunky faux-shearling kimono coat, a stand-out piece where classic Monki lines meet the material of the season, and the even chunkier quilted coat. As always, denim forms a centre point, combining Monki elements with inspiration from Asian techniques like boro. And lets not forget the monkis. Fans of Monki’s own mascots will welcome Oki’s new fancy fur.
