Echoing the brand’s 40th anniversary, Agnès Troublé, founder and designer of agnès b., has her very first biography “agnès b. STYLISTE”.  In celebration of the book launch, Madam Agnès b. made her presence in Hong Kong on 24th November for her book launch and signing party after her first book tour stop in Tokyo. The book launch and signing party was held at K11 agnès b RUE DE MARSEILLE where she unveiled the multi-faceted world of agnès b. to all her fashion, arts and culture enthusiast-supporters!

Agnès b. (born Agnès Troublé) was born in 1941 in Versailles, where it encased the memories of her childhood. Growing up in a family with four siblings and later married to Christian Bourgois, Agnès’s father always encouraged her to explore music and arts. She joined ELLE magazine as a junior fashion editor, and also worked as a stylist at Dorothée Bis and Cacharel. In 1975, Agnès opened her first shop on rue du Jour in Paris, expanding into men’s and children’s in 1981. She created her subsidiaries in the Netherlands (1983), Japan (1984) and the UK (1987). agnès b. arrived in Hong Kong in 1995. Today, the agnès b. group has over 300 stores worldwide.

Since the beginning, Agnès has been creating clean yet timeless pieces for every collection, defining her own vocabulary while mixing classic fashion codes with modern chic style. The unforgettable pieces, adaptable to any and all styles of the moment, eventually proliferate into a reputable international fashion empire. “40 years flies by and I am glad to have grown gracefully with my brand.  I feel so blessed to have walked through this journey with all my dear friends, who shaped me, influenced me, moved me deeply,” Agnès said, “Working on my biography gave me a chance to look back at many remarkable moments for the brand any myself, and I want to say a big thank you to my team in France, Europe, the United States, Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, China – everyone who’s been here through it all.”

For her visit to Hong Kong, Agnès further, “I do not believe in borders and differences but rather in crossing cultural lines. In every country, I no doubt speak to the same people, with perhaps some of the same desires, who watch the same movies or listen, more or less, to the same popular music. I am delighted to visit Hong Kong again and meet friends who share the same taste and values.”

The book unveils the multi-faceted world of agnès b., including her personal work, the behind-the-scene of the house signature pieces eg. the most welcomed snap cardigans, work clothes as well as photoprints etc. it also talks about her as a patron, sponsor of TARA ocean expedition, GALERIE DU JOUR owner, film maker and art collector.

“agnès b. STYLISTE”was launched in France and Japan earlier. Its English version will be officaially launched globally from Spring Summer 2017. This special edition with tote bag and posteris now exclusively pre-launched in agnès b. shops in Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Having been known as the polished TV personality at Dolce Vita on Pearl Television and a well dressed bowtie emcee at multiple international corporate events, Desmond So has long been an active advocate for etiquette in a city like Hong Kong. With one of a kind background excelling in J.D. and M.B.A. in the States, he has come up with the idea to start “Not Just The Right Fork” when he was working in private banking in Hong Kong and noticing the margin for improvements for lots of people on formalized etiquette and communications skills training. After the growing realization that there is a need to split the business models post launching his first venture, an executive decision has been made that “Not just the Right Fork” would focus entirely on children while a new company “East-West Institute of Applied Etiquette” would cater to adults, executives and professionals in Hong Kong, Macau and China. One of the worst experiences of etiquette that Desmond has encountered previously was with two children that he was coaching and during those few hours spending time with them, he realized their behaviors were a result of parental neglect more than being ill-mannered. By talking with them and offering a sympathetic ear, Desmond got them to open up and was able to make some changes in their behaviors after just 2 hours.

1Desmond believes that a key component of etiquette is respect. He never faults people for not knowing the small nitty-gritty principles but one should always respect others and practice basic human decency. When someone is rude not because he or she doesn’t know a technical rule but because he or she chooses to treat others with ill will or contempt, Desmond then finds it deplorable and unacceptable.

Desmond points out that when meeting somebody, people tend to notice a person’s physical attributes first, which include height, posture, features, facial expressions, hair, makeup, attire and accessories but close on the heels of physical attributes are body language, voice, and conversation and he thinks that it behooves people to get all of these things right when greeting others. These are the public figures who have caught his attention whom he finds them to have high sense of etiquette: Government à Ms. Carrie Lam (Chief Secretary); Private Sector à Mr. Daryl Ng (Sino Group); Media à Mr. Robin Hu (SCMP); and Entertainment à Mr. Anderson Junior 安德尊 (Actor/Presenter).

Etiquette can be very broad and refer to generally prescribed conduct relating to social behaviors or it can refer to narrow guidelines specific to an occasion or activity (e.g., dining etiquette). From Desmond’s observations, one area that finance and fintech professionals in Hong Kong can improve on imminently is business attire. Perhaps because a lack of education in this area along with external factors like the influence of K-pop; his human resource friends have been informing him that business dress code is heading down a slippery slope and needs to be reined in despite the fact that etiquette has become more relaxed over time. Some of the egregious behaviors in workplace or in common social functions that Desmond has noticed are bad table manners (burping; being rude to waitstaff; picking teeth at table; etc.) and poor business etiquette (weak handshakes; failure to use people’s titles; getting too friendly too quickly; inappropriate attire; etc.)

Etiquette is constantly changing.  A generation ago, people wrote hand-written letters to each other. Some millennials nowadays have never written a formal hand-written letter. More recently, most people who were used to writing emails for business would not have anticipated yet another disruptive shift to mobile apps such as WeChat and WhatsApp, which takes informality to a whole different level. When asked about how Desmond and his company can shape the future of etiquette, he said “our vision remains to create a more polite, caring, and civil society and to change the way the rest of the world perceives individuals and businesses from Hong Kong, Macau, and China. Every person should practice the same set of etiquette and treat people with respect and decency.  There is no class of persons who should be doing things ‘differently’ by virtue of their vocation or industry.”

The majority of people that East-West Institute of Applied Etiquette teaches are business executives or young adults entering a formal business environment.  Erring on the side of conservatism would be well advised and appropriate. Desmond also added, “do not confuse being polite with being socially or professionally inapt. Just because someone is well-mannered, well-spoken, does not raise his voice, and says ‘thank you’ a lot does not undermine his ability to convey ideas effectively, act confidently, and achieve what he wants.  A well-mannered person is not a pushover.”

Low-Cost Airfare Can Come With Surprisingly High Fees for In-Flight Snacks and Services

Travel search engine KAYAK.com.hk reveals how low-cost carriers are marking up snack prices and charging fees for baggage and seat selection

Hong Kong, 23 June 2016: Low-cost carriers (“LCCs”) such as HK Express, Jetstar, and Tigerair have become increasingly popular among Hong Kong travellers. While these carriers provide amazing savings on airfares, some fliers are unaware of what other fees and markups can apply. To help travellers budget more accurately, KAYAK.com.hk reveals LCCs’ snack markups and other extra fees.

Pack some snacks or pay sky-high prices on board
Travellers often expect to pay more for snacks and drinks while travelling on LCCs. But research has revealed that some are charging prices for snacks and drinks that are just ‘plane’ crazy.  For example, a beer costs, on average, 360% more up in the air than at a supermarket. Bottled soda was revealed to be the worst offender. A 250ml can of soda costs HK$22.60 (S$4.00) on Tigerair, and just HK$5.60 for 500ml on the ground (a 707% markup). Sky-high prices were also uncovered on everyday snack items; HK Express charges as much as HK$25.00 for 40g of potato crisps (HK$68.75 per 110g) while the supermarket price is only HK$12.50 for 110g – a three figure increase of 450%. To avoid high markups, have something to eat prior to flying, or pack some snacks to bring on board.

Pack light and nice or pay a heavy charge
LCC tickets normally allow travellers to bring hand luggage with a weight of 7-10kg onboard. However, if travellers wish to check baggage in the hold, extra fees apply. HK Express, Jetstar, and Tigerair charge HK$150-260 for a 20kg baggage allowance during the initial booking process; note that this is per short-haul flight. At the airport, if travellers wish to purchase the equivalent baggage allowance, this cost can increase up to HK$570 (a 280% increase). Avoid these hefty fees by planning ahead or simply by packing light.

Nicer seats come with a price tag
When booking flights with LCCs, travellers will often have pre-assigned seats. Additional charges will be incurred should travellers wish to change their seats. Among the same 3 popular LCCs in Hong Kong, the option to reserve a specific seat online is available with varying price tags. A standard seat costs HK$34, HK$35, and HK$45 for Tigerair, Jetstar, and HK Express, respectively.  Seats near the front or seats with extra legroom range from HK$73 to HK$200. To avoid extra costs, travellers should arrive at the airport a little early to request a seat change, at the check-in desk.

All of these extra fees add up and need to be taken into consideration when travel planning. This year, the Montblanc M collection was awarded for the Red Dot: Best of the Best, which is the top prize in the Red Dot Award: Product Design. This prize is reserved for the best products in a category.With the launch of the Montblanc M writing instrument, the Maison demonstrates the passion for innovation that has always been part of Montblanc’s DNA, continuously pushing the boundaries of design with timelessly elegant and high-performing creations. Through its collaboration with designer Marc Newson, Montblanc has developed a new aesthetic language, capturing the spirit of the moment in a writing instrument that expresses the modernity of today and the timeless elegance of tomorrow.

For the first ever design partnership in the Maison’s long history, Montblanc has chosen to work with Marc Newson, without a doubt the most influential designer of his generation”, says Jérôme Lambert, Montblanc CEO. “Montblanc M brings together Newson’s trademark biomorphic style, defined by its fluid and pure organic forms, and Montblanc’s iconic design cues, resulting in a new and unexpected expression for writing instruments.”

In an original approach to the craftsmanship with which Montblanc is synonymous, Newson brings innovative design elements to the writing experience, perfectly balancing form and function with an object that has both a rational existence and makes a bold aesthetic statement. Functionality is expressed in the ingenious use of a magnet that allows the magnetic closing of the cap and barrel, with perfect alignment of the clip to the innovative “plateau” at the barrel end. An additional snap mechanism smoothens the closure and ensures the cap remains firmly in place. For the first time ever, a Montblanc writing instrument takes on an additional function, as a Fineliner pen for technical and precision drawing.

While Newson has retained distinctive design elements of a Montblanc writing instrument including the use of black precious resin and the iconic white emblem, the shape of Montblanc M stands out with a “plateau” at the end of the writing instrument created by milling the polished black resin with a diamond tool. The fluidity of the overall design is achieved by avoiding breaks in the pure lines of the shape. Thus, the Montblanc emblem made of white precious resin is ultrasonically welded onto the plateau to form a perfectly flat surface, while the platinum-plated clip is mounted invisibly into the cap to not interrupt the design flow. For an optimal writing experience, the ruthenium-plated metal forepart engraved with “MONTBLANC”, balances the weight of the writing instrument. The AU585 gold nib of the writing instrument is plated in two tones for the first time, using both rhodium and ruthenium.

Inspired by the Maison’s heritage of sophistication, every design element comes together to deliver a multi-sensorial sensory writing experience, reflecting the discerning customer’s increasing desire to slow down, disconnect and enjoy products that bring the senses together: a piece to be seen, felt and heard all at once. “Like Montblanc, I seek to strike a balance in the design between the simplicity of the functional qualities of this product and the creation of a sensory experience in its use,” explains Marc Newson. “From the sight of the shape’s clean lines or the detailed plating of the nib, from the touch and feel of the writing instrument with its polished surface and ruthenium forepart, to the sound of the click of the cap as it is drawn to the body of the writing instrument with the magnet, Montblanc M offers a seamless writing experience that engages the senses.”

With this new generation of writing instruments, Montblanc continues to redefine the culture of writing, crafting fine lifetime companions that deliver the highest quality and unexpected cutting-edge design. Though it stands at the forefront of contemporary design today, it has been designed with the same timeless qualities as every Montblanc writing instrument. Montblanc M is available in Fountain Pen, Rollerball, Ballpoint Pen, ScreenWriter for use on touch screens and as a thin Montblanc Artfineliner for technical drawing. During the launch year only, the nib is engraved with the letters “MN” as a tribute to the designer who imagined this latest evolution in writing culture.

On Thursday, March 3, Beats by Dr. Dre (Beats) hosted an exclusive Sound Symposium event at the Post Mountain Art Space, Beijing, where Beats’ President Luke Wood and celebrity guest artist JJ Lin led a live panel discussion centered around the importance of sound quality in delivering the emotion in music.

To kick off the event, Beats premiered “My Journey”, a short film featuring JJ Lin, in which he explains the creative process behind his latest album, From M.E. To Myself. Following the campaign debut, Luke and JJ were joined on stage by Michael Au, Universal Music China producer, and Billy Koh, CEO of Qida Music. Moderated by MC Lisa Chan, of MTV Asia, the four panelists engaged in lively dialogue to a private audience of 100 specially invited media, influencer and industry guests.

The Beats Sound Symposium Beijing event finale was a live performance by JJ Lin, who performed four songs with his band: “Twilight” “Too Bad,” “Practice Love,” and “Jiangnan,”

Launched in 2014, the Beats Sound Symposium is an intimate live-panel series that brings together some of the most respected artists, producers, and music industry veterans from around the world to participate in an open discussion about the artistry of record production and the importance of delivering the emotion of playback in the recording studio to the listening experience for consumers.

The Beats Sound Symposium has been previously held in London, Tokyo, Berlin and Sydney.
