Exclusive: Behind the scenes with Little Mix

Not just for guilt-free hair styling; ghd stylers are also the faux microphone of choice for Little Mix.

Spotted backstage while filming their video for Hair, which is released on Wednesday 20th April, the Little Mix girls were belting the lyrics for the new single into ghd serene pearl platinum® stylers while dancing around Leigh-Anne’s bedroom.

 2

Not only do they look amazing – the no compromise ghd platinum serene pearl stylers take the guilt out of heat styling by using safer-for-hair heat that delivers ultimate styling results in just one stroke.

What’s more, hair is also proven to be healthier*, stronger* and shinier**, as showcased by Little Mix’s lovely manes; it’s no wonder these limited edition ghd stylers have become the most in-demand styling tool since they launched earlier this month.

Whether they’re singing into them (we’ve all been there, as has David Beckham, and we love that Little Mix do it too!) or styling their hair with them, the Little Mix girls are keeping a tight grip on their new ghd platinum serene pearl stylers – get one before they sell out!

Little Mix ‘Hair’ single launches on 20 April 2016. To view the video go to ghd.tm/littlemixHAIR

We’ll Sea You On Father’s Day! Wooloomooloo Pays Ocean-Sweet Tribute to Dads of the World with a Delightful Bit of Surf ‘n’ Turf

Father’s Day is just around the corner, and it’s time to celebrate from sea to shining sea with some surf ‘n’ turf action at Wooloomooloo Prime and Wooloomooloo Steakhouse! With summer on the rise, there is no better time to enjoy glistening flavours from the deep blue sea and a natural slice of indulgent ocean freshness that will surely please the old man!

5-Course Father’s Day Dinner Menu at Wooloomooloo Prime (TST) and Wooloomooloo Prime (CWB):

Wooloomooloo Prime CWB - 28F Dining Room 03

A beautiful sea breeze is sweeping through as we begin our Father’s Day Dinner Menu at Wooloomooloo Prime – served on June 18-19 – with a little help from Mother Nature’s abundance of natural flavour. The first course is a beautifully fresh Carpaccio Sampler of Tuna, Beef & Hamachi, served with a rocket and pea shoot salad, roasted romero peppers and house infused lemon oil.

To follow are three mouth-watering dishes served together as a gorgeous second course, bursting with flavour, variety and beautiful balance. Savour the delicious trio of Scallops on Black Pudding with Herb Butter, the Bacon-Wrapped Shrimps and Spiced Tomato Salsa, and the Confit Octopus with Chorizo and New Potatoes. Now that’s what we call a seafood course!

The soup course is pure tradition in the form of the lovely Lobster Bisque, served with crispy pancetta chips and bursting with concentrated crustacean flavour. Continuing with your main course, we present a choice of either the classic Broiled Tenderloin & Lobster Tail served with sweet potato dauphinoise, smoked paprika and garlic butter, the highly comforting Lemon Risotto with Proscuitto and Shrimp, or the Roasted Cod Wrapped in Parma Ham paired with lobster mashed potatoes and grilled asparagus.

For dessert, select one from either the Seasonal Cheese Selection platter, the decadently irresistible Wooloomooloo Hot Chocolate Cake with vanilla gelato, or for a slightly naughtier dad-friendly treat, the Whisky Don Pedro features creamy whisky ice cream blended with yet more whisky. With freshly brewed tea or coffee to finish, the 5-Course Father’s Day Dinner Menu is priced at $798 (+10%) per person. Kids are also in for a treat with our special Father’s Day Dinner Kids Menu, packed full of kid-friendly dishes with mini cheese burgers, crispy fish ‘n’ chips, big bowls of ice cream and much more. The only issue might be that dad could steal a delicious bite or two…

4-Course Wooloomooloo Prime Father’s Day Brunch Menu:

Of course, dad might want to do a lazy brunch on his big day, and Wooloomooloo Prime duly obliges! For brunch service on June 18-19, we’ll serve a slightly streamlined 4-Course Brunch version of the Father’s Day dinner menu. Diners can select one appetiser course from either the Carpaccio Sampler of Tuna, Beef & Hamachi, the Scallops on Black Pudding with Herb Butter, the Bacon-Wrapped Shrimps with Spiced Tomato Salsa or the Confit Octopus with Chorizo and New Potatoes. The rest of this delectable menu for dads stays the same as the dinner edition, and the Father’s Day Brunch Menu is priced at $398 (+10%) per person. Of course, brunch and free flow beverages are a natural duo, so we’ve provided an option for two hours of free flow juice and sodas with brunch at $498 (+10%) per person, or two hours of free flow Prosecco, wine and beer for $598 (+10%) per person. There will also be a special kids menu available during brunch service over Father’s Day weekend.

4-Course Wooloomooloo Steakhouse (Wan Chai) Father’s Day Brunch:

Continuing on a brunch theme with some further surf ‘n’ turf action, Wooloomooloo Steakhouse (Wan Chai) delivers a delectable sea-inspired treat for brunch service on June 18-19. Firstly, all dads will be treated to one complimentary glass of beer or wine to get things off on the right foot!

Then for your starter, we’ve prepared a choice between Kilpatrick versus Rockefeller, a scintillating matchup of baked oyster heavyweights with a pair from each classic recipe represented, or the Grilled Calamari, Scallop and Chorizo Kebabs, a beautiful balance of ocean sweetness and a dash of spice, served with fresh green papaya salsa. The soup course of Shellfish Chowder features another all-star selection of seafood – mussels, clams and oysters – cooked beautifully as a hearty chowder and served with garlic croutons and luscious smoked bacon.

Wooloomooloo Prime - Broiled Tenderloin & Grilled Tiger Prawns 烤牛柳配虎蝦 02

We’ve not made your choice of delicious main course easy, but either road you take is still a clear winner! Select either the Surf & Turf Flap Steak with a hugely flavourful cut of oven-roasted steak, baked tiger prawns and jumbo crab lumps served with herb butter, or the Ultimate Surf & Turf Burger featuring Australian tenderloin and Alaskan crab legs with watercress, rocket and smoked paprika butter. Dessert is classic territory with a choice between Tiramisu or the all-time great Black Forest Cake served with vanilla gelato. With freshly brewed tea or coffee to finish, the Wooloomooloo Steakhouse (Wan Chai) 4-Course Father’s Day Brunch is priced at $380(+10%) per diner.

Wooloomooloo Steakhouse WC - Ultimate Surf & Turf Burger 海陸漢堡 02

Wooloomooloo Steakhouse (TST East) Father’s Day Brunch

A harbourside brunch sounds like just the ticket for dear old dad, and Wooloomooloo Steakhouse (TST East) is an excellent option for it. Our Father’s Day brunch menu begins with Crispy Fried Salmon Dumpling with Smoked Duck Breast Salsa and garden greens, or the Grilled Squid and Duck Confit paired with baby spinach, cherry tomatoes, roasted walnut and honey mustard dressing. For the soup course, we’ve prepared a zesty and developed Rich Tomato Seafood Soup with juicy pork sausage and crunchy garlic croutons.

For your main course, we’ve prepared a choice between the Pan-Seared Halibut Fillet Wrapped in Parma Hamwith roasted potatoes, apple and fennel salad, the succulent Roasted Chicken Breast Stuffed with Scallop Mousse served with carrot mash and caviar cream sauce, or the delectable Slow-Cooked Boneless Short Ribs and Grilled Scallop Skewers paired with crispy fried sage, carrot and cherry tomato confit. We’ve also created a Father’s Day special dessert (available for an extra $35) in the form of the Rich Chocolate Cake, served with a crowd-pleasing caramel ice cream. With a cup of freshly brewed tea or coffee included, the Wooloomooloo Steakhouse (TST East) Father’s Day brunch menu is priced at $250 (+10%) per person.

Alibaba Entrepreneurs Fund Announces Investments in 3 Early-Stage Hong Kong Companies

The Hong Kong Entrepreneurs Fund (the “Fund”), a not-for-profit initiative of Alibaba Group Holding Limited (NYSE: BABA), which was set up last November to support entrepreneurs in Hong Kong, today announced the selection of three early-stage companies as the first batch of companies to receive minority investments from the Fund.

The three companies are YEECHOO, Shopline and GoGoVan. YEECHOO operates an online designer apparel rental business; Shopline provides cloud-based computing solutions for small and medium-sized companies to launch and manage ecommerce operations; and GoGoVan offers intra-city logistics services through a real-time platform that connects customers with a network of delivery service providers. The three companies are based in Hong Kong with significant local operations.

Mr. Joe Tsai, executive vice president of Alibaba Group and board director of Alibaba Hong Kong Entrepreneurs Fund, said “These companies embrace technology to create value for the society, and we are excited to work with them and help them grow their businesses with resources available from the Fund and Alibaba Group.  The entrepreneurs behind these companies also exemplify the entrepreneurial spirit in Hong Kong.  We look forward to supporting more aspiring entrepreneurs in Hong Kong in the future.”

In addition to funding, the companies will have the opportunity to leverage resources from Alibaba’s Group’s vibrant ecosystem in order to scale and accelerate the expansion into other markets.

Since November 2015, the Fund has received more than 200 applications from entrepreneurs whose companies were in different stages of development.  The three companies were selected after several rounds of management interviews and extensive due diligence reviews.  The Fund will continue to look for promising entrepreneurs and engaging them through discussion of their business plans.

The Society of Publishers in Asia Awards for Editorial Excellence Smashes Last Year’s Record-Breaking Total

The Society of Publishers in Asia Awards for Editorial Excellence Smashes Last Year’s Record-Breaking Total

HONG KONG, CHINA – Apr 28, 2016 – The Society of Publishers in Asia (SOPA) received a record- breaking number of entries for the 2016 SOPA Awards for Editorial Excellence for the second year in a row. Now in their 18th year, the SOPA Awards attracted more than 700 entries in English and Chinese.

The awards are widely regarded as the most prestigious in the publishing industry in the Asia Pacific region. The list of finalists will be released in May, and the winners will be announced at a gala dinner on Wednesday, June 15, 2016, at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.

“The number of entries again this year illustrates how much SOPA recognition is valued,” said S.K. Witcher, chair of the SOPA Editorial Awards Committee.  “There was a significant rise in participation by media outlets in Hong Kong, Thailand and Australia. And within the categories themselves, a large increase in the number of entries in the digital news and information graphics categories underscored the growing importance of presenting news for a mobile audience.”

The SOPA Awards for Editorial Excellence are given in 18 categories, including news, photography and lifestyle coverage. Last year, such local and international organizations as Reuters, the Financial Times, The International New York Times, Time magazine and the South China Morning Post were among the recipients. One of the highlights of the gala dinner is the award for Journalist of the Year, won last year by Nancy Carvajal of the Philippine Daily Inquirer.

Each category will be evaluated by a panel of judges appointed by the awards administrators, the Journalism & Media Studies Centre of the University of Hong Kong (JMSC), and conducted by a team of 100 judges from around the globe, including journalists, editors, columnists from leading publications and notable academics from university media departments.

The judging panel will be led by Jeffrey Timmermans, an associate professor of practice at JMSC and director of its undergraduate journalism program. The deputy head of judges will be King-wa Fu, an assistant professor at JMSC.

“The SOPA Awards for Editorial Excellence are recognized as the industry ‘gold standard,’ celebrating the very best in journalistic quality and integrity,” said SOPA Chairman Raymond Warhola. “SOPA Awards are prestigious, and their winners reflect an elite group in Asia. The record number of entries received again this year continues to affirm SOPA’s leadership and unwavering commitment to publishing excellence in the region.”

This year, as it did last year, SOPA is organizing media tours at Bloomberg and Google on the same day as the gala dinner on June 15th. Google will host a breakfast networking and workshop event, and Bloomberg will provide a media tour in the afternoon. For more information, visit http://www.sopawards.com/workshop-and-media-tours/

The SOPA 2016 Awards for Editorial Excellence are supported by Invest Hong Kong (Platinum Sponsor) and Google (Gold Sponsor). CatchOn is the public relations partner, Media OutReach is the newswire partner and CTPS is the printing partner.

Tickets for the gala dinner are on sale now. To reserve your tickets for the SOPA 2016 Awards for Editorial Excellence at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on June 15, please contact the SOPA Secretariat at Tel: +852 3589-9778 / mail@sopasia.com or visit http://www.sopawards.com.

In parallel, over 250 gems and minerals from the renowned Collection of the French National Museum of Natural History invited by L’École Van Cleef & Arpels, highlight the major principles critical to the precious stones’ formation.

Between Mountain and River: Alsace Comes Alive as La Table de Patrick Celebrates Le French GourMay With a Special Alsace-Inspired Menu

Between Mountain and River: Alsace Comes Alive as La Table de Patrick Celebrates Le French GourMay With a Special Alsace-Inspired Menu

Spring reaches full bloom just in time for Le French GourMay, and the regional theme for this year’s festival is particularly apt. Alsace is a living symbol of spring nestled between the Vosges Mountains and the Rhine, a land bordering both Germany and Switzerland that pulses with vibrancy and inter-regional culture. La Table de Patrick and Chef Patrick Goubier, one of the city’s longest serving and most beloved French chefs, have created a delectable 4-course menu to salute Alsace and Le French GourMay. Much like the diversity of the region itself, Chef Goubier’s menu is a convergence of ingredients from different cultures united by classic French gastronomy and technique.

Served from May 2nd through the entire month, the 4-Course Alsace French GourMay 2016 Menu begins with a classic Escargot on a Bed of Comfit Red Cabbage, an enticing dish of delicate balance with comforting sautéed garlic and onion, sweet notes from apricots and raisins and finished with a developed pinot noir sauce and a dash of cinnamon. Chef Goubier’s mastery of foie gras is on full display in the next course, a Home-smoked Foie Gras and Black Pudding Parcel topped with sauerkraut foam flavoured with Alsatian beer. Beech-smoked foie gras is a perfect complement to the savoury and robust black pudding, accented beautifully with the natural partnership of tangy sauerkraut and German-influenced Alsatian beer.

Snail on a bed of comfit red cabbage, Pinot Noir sauce, dash of cinnamon 法國蝸牛伴紅酒椰菜

Chef Goubier’s main course, a Braised Pork Cheek with Morels and Riesling Sauce, is pure satisfaction. Served with Münster and potato gratin, it’s an instant delight that hits all the right notes on the comfort scale. The aromatic Riesling sauce is the result of two days of fermentation, lifting the slow-cooked braised pork cheek to a succulent high with earthy morels soaking up all that gorgeous flavour. For dessert, Chef Goubier has prepared a spring-laden Alsace-style Rhubarb and Apple Tart, perfectly paired with a delicious scoop of gingerbread ice cream.

It wouldn’t quite be Le French GourMay without a celebration of both food and wine, and Chef Goubier duly delivers with four exceptional vintages from Alsace. The Josmeyer Fleur de Lotus AOC 2013 ($98 per glass, $528 per bottle) is a beautifully balanced wine with a floral bouquet of spring bloom, accented by hints of coriander and white pepper. It transitions flawlessly to notes of clove and liquorice on the palate with a gorgeous finale of spices that linger delicately. Or, enjoy the Josmeyer Riesling Le Kottabe AOC 2013 ($108 per glass, $578 per bottle), a perfect warm weather wine with an exotic blend of lemon drops, honey and apricots on the nose followed by a juicy, stony mouth feel lifted by a glimpse of acidity that accents the orange and lemon notes throughout. Josmeyer Gewurztraminer Vendanges Tardives AOC 2016 ($158 per glass, $888 per bottle) is pure Alsace with a white flower bouquet, honey and flowers on the palate with a balanced, rich structure that’s perfect for pairing with many desserts. And the red wine selection is the Josmeyer Pinot Noir Herrenweg AOC 2012 ($128 per glass, $688 per bottle), a soft and alluring vintage that owes its silky mouth feel to grapes grown from the unique soil conditions of the Herrenweg area in Turckheim.

The 4-course Alsace French May menu is priced at $598 (+10%) per diner, delivering a harmonious union of Alsatian culture, French technique and spring flavours in one delectable menu.

Sicheng Yu, Vice President of Alibaba Cloud, said, “SK Holdings C&C is a well-respected ICT service provider in Korea, and we are proud to partner with them to extend our global footprint. We believe the collaboration will empower clients from both Alibaba Cloud and SK by offering them one global account through which they will enjoy reliable, fast-speed cloud services without borders.”

USD 1 Million in Funding Raised for 37 Projects via Art Basel’s Crowdfunding Initiative

USD 1 Million in Funding Raised for 37 Projects via Art Basel’s Crowdfunding Initiative

Art Basel’s Crowdfunding Initiative reaches milestone of USD 1 million, helping to fund 37 non-profit art projects from 16 countries around the world

Art Basel is pleased to announce that over USD 1 million has been raised to support outstanding international art projects since the launch of its Crowdfunding Initiative in September 2014. Thanks to pledges from over 6,700 backers around the world – comprised of supporters from each organization’s local community, the vibrant online Kickstarter community and Art Basel’s highly engaged global audience – 37 art projects have been successfully funded via Art Basel’s curated page on Kickstarter.

The international scope of the Crowdfunding Initiative speaks to the artworld’s increasing diversity, with participating non-profits from around the world – all but one are based outside of Art Basel’s three show locations. Funded projects have come from Afghanistan, Australia, Canada, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Haiti, Italy, Mexico, Myanmar, Nigeria, Sri Lanka, Thailand, the United Kingdom, the United States and Vietnam, and have been supported by backers from 92 countries.

Spanning a variety of formats, topics and geographies, these wide ranging projects demonstrate the critical role that non-profits play in providing a platform for artists and creative thinkers to sustain a thoughtful, cutting-edge artistic practice. The funds raised through micro-donations have supported projects including studios and residencies in Chiang Mai and Chicago; public art works in Detroit and Rome; a new dance commission in Vancouver; a series of programs exploring the history of performance art in the Arab world in London; and several exhibitions, including an interactive installation in Kabul and the expansion of the first photography festival in Lagos. Additional projects entail artist books, monographs and other education programs in cities such as Colombo, Port-au-Prince, San José and Yangon.

Marc Spiegler, Art Basel’s Global Director, says, ‘We strongly believe that thriving non-profits – particularly outside of the major art centers – are vital to the health of the artworld ecosystem. The Art Basel Crowdfunding Initiative provides a platform beyond our three main shows and within the digital sphere to connect non-profits with potential funders, allowing these organizations to develop innovative projects that might otherwise not have been realized.’

Patrick Foret, Director of Business Initiatives, adds, ‘We launched the Crowdfunding Initiative to address the urgent need for alternative funding in the arts, and have been inspired by the response. While Art Basel has dedicated resources to the creation and promotion of the initiative, it is truly due to the backers and their generous support that have made it such a success. We look forward to continuing our partnership with Kickstarter to help these organizations flourish and realize exciting new projects.’

Kendel Shore, VP of Communities at Kickstarter commented, ‘Our partnership with Art Basel is shining a light on inventive arts initiatives from around the globe, representing the breadth and diversity of voices in today’s artworld. We’re thrilled that our on-going collaboration with Art Basel to advise on and amplify the work these non-profits are bringing to life has reached such an important milestone.’

Palo Alto Networks Extends Breach Prevention to the Cloud

Palo Alto Networks Extends Breach Prevention to the Cloud

New Functionality in PAN-OS Version 7.1 Delivers Universal Protection Across Multi-Cloud Environments and SaaS Applications

Hong Kong, April 13, 2016 – Palo Alto Networks® (NYSE: PANW), the next-generation security company, has announced advancements to its Next-Generation Security Platform that are designed to extend the breach prevention capabililties of the platform and address the security needs of businesses working with cloud-based environments and software-as-a-service (SaaS) applications.

The demand for organizations to become ever more agile and competitive is driving a change in the way business applications are developed, deployed, and adopted. Workloads and data are increasingly distributed across physical and cloud computing environments. This changes the threat landscape and increases the risk of exposure to cyberattacks, which is compounded by the limitations of legacy security products that were not designed for this distributed, cloud-based infrastructure.

Palo Alto Networks has addressed these challenges, and many more, in PAN-OS® 7.1. This version of the operating system extends the breach prevention capabilities of the security platform to all major clouds and provides visibility, control, and threat prevention designed to protect customer data regardless of where it resides. Additionally, among the new features are certificate and two-factor authentication advancements that help protect user credentials or neutralize them if they are stolen.

QUOTES
“As organizations continue to embrace the cloud and SaaS for workloads and data, it’s crucial that security solutions keep pace. The capabilities introduced in this new release of PAN-OS provide scalable visibility, control, and threat prevention and offers the deployment flexibility required by today’s distributed organizations and their employees.” – Jeff Wilson, senior research director and advisor, cybersecurity, IHS Technology

“Enterprises require consistent security regardless of where their applications reside. The latest release of PAN-OS addresses new challenges presented by the cloud, enabling organizations to take advantage of agile cloud-based infrastructure and applications while maintaining a consistent security posture.” – Lee Klarich, EVP, product management at Palo Alto Networks

Many of the more than 50 features delivered in PAN-OS 7.1 will help customers:

  • Secure Any Cloud – By adding Microsoft® Azure™ and Hyper-V support for the Palo Alto Networks VM-Series and by enhancing VM-Series auto-scaling support in AWS, organizations can achieve a scalable security architecture that enables consistent prevention measures to be deployed from the network, to the public and private cloud, and to the remote user.
  • Embrace SaaS – With the release of PAN-OS 7.1 and the newest update to Aperture, Palo Alto Networks adds to its extensive SaaS application capabilities to safely enable Office 365™ deployments.
  • Accelerate Preventative Action With Threat Intelligence – With new capabilities supported in the WildFire™ threat prevention and AutoFocus™ threat intelligence services, and PAN-OS, organizations can discover zero-day malware targeting the Mac® OS X® platform and prevent attacks with the global WildFire feed, now published every five minutes. PAN-OS 7.1 now fully supports Mac OS X signatures and the ability to send Mac OS X files to the cloud. AutoFocus now can add context to every attack and make threat intelligence actionable across the organization.
  • Prevent Breaches With Secure User Credentials – By streamlining the user experience associated with two-factor authentication in GlobalProtect™ mobile security, organizations can neutralize stolen user credentials. Additionally, enhancements to WildFire and PAN-DB help prevent identity theft from happening in the first place by stopping known and unknown attacks and preventing phishing attempts.

Availability

  • PAN-OS and Panorama 7.1 are now available to Palo Alto Networks customers with a current support contract.
  • VM-series availability in Microsoft’s Azure cloud is expected in late April.
  • Mac OS X support in the WildFire cloud is available now for early access.

Alibaba Cloud Launches Global Start-up Program “Create@Alibaba Cloud”

Alibaba Cloud Launches Global Start-up Program “Create@Alibaba Cloud”

Singapore, April 11, 2016 - Alibaba Cloud, the cloud computing arm of Alibaba Group, announced today the launch of its 2016 global start-up program, “Create@Alibaba Cloud.”

This is Alibaba Cloud’s first global start-up program, aimed at championing start-ups and maximizing their potential through Alibaba’s comprehensive support network and innovative suite of cloud infrastructure services.

????????????????????????????????????

Mr. Sicheng Yu, Vice President of Alibaba Cloud, says: “Our focus has always been to empower our global customers with our cloud expertise to achieve greater global coverage and expansion into international markets. Through our program, we hope to make our sophisticated networking solutions and big-data intelligence also available to start-ups and small enterprises to accelerate their business growth. This is Alibaba Cloud’s first global start-up program, expanding from previous initiatives in China and Hong Kong, and we’re proud to launch it here in Singapore.”

Program Benefits
As part of the program, participants will receive funding for investments into IT infrastructure for the first year, technology training for professionals, tailor-made IT solutions designed by Alibaba Cloud’s architects and one-on-one post-sales support, to help the start-ups get their business up to speed and running smoothly.

In addition to offering cloud capabilities, Create@Alibaba Cloud also empowers start-ups with better access to overseas markets and potential connections, which is crucial for those looking to expand internationally. Program participants will receive support through Alibaba Cloud’s global start-up partners’ network for funding, working spaces, and incubation, as well as leverage Alibaba’s resources in China to manage challenges in entering the China market. Program partners currently include Silicon Valley Association of Chinese Entrepreneurs Inc (SVACE), Hanhai Investment Inc, Hong Kong Science Park. The participating start-ups will also be invited to join Alibaba Cloud’s marketing campaigns, both online and offline.

As part of the program, a series of competitions will be rolled out in key regions including ASEAN markets, Hong Kong, Korea, the Middle East and Europe, to honor start-ups that demonstrate good business potentials. Regional winners from the competitions will have the opportunity to pitch their business ideas and conduct live product demos at the annual Alibaba Computing Conference Hangzhou Summit in October 2016. During the program roll-out, cloud workshops, entrepreneurship talks and other activities will also be held in these key regions.

Expansion in ASEAN
Alibaba Cloud has chosen Singapore as the regional hub for the program for the country’s strong links and access to other ASEAN markets, including Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia. With its close connectivity and reputation as Asia’s most entrepreneurial economy, start-ups in the program can easily build connections in Singapore and catapult into neighbouring markets.

Mr. Pang Heng Soon, General Manager of Infocomms Investments under the Infocomm Development Authority (IDA) of Singapore, says: “We are constantly looking at ways to continue building a strong support ecosystem for start-ups in Singapore through initiatives such as the Create@Alibaba Cloud program. For start-ups to succeed they will need both technical know-how and market insights; 2 through the program, entrepreneurs will gain access to cloud capabilities, financial capital and insights on cross-border expansion to reach their full potential.”

The Success Journey: Marissa Mayer’s Pre-Yahoo Resume

The Success Journey: Marissa Mayer’s Pre-Yahoo Resume

8th April 2016

When you hear the name Marissa Mayer, the first thing that comes to your mind is Yahoo. What most people don’t know, however, is that she has done numerous super impressive things before becoming the CEO of Yahoo in July 2012.

We believe that everyone should be aware of her achievements before stepping into Yahoo, so we created her first Enhancv resume that emphasises on Marissa not only as a professional, but also as a student and as a person.

Did you know all these facts about her?

marissa-resume-blog-2 (1)

Marissa Mayer was the 1st female engineer at Google and their 20th employee back in the day when Google was just a startup Larry and Sergey had started at Stanford.

Being a woman in a male-dominated industry, Marissa appears to have always been an overachiever at everything she does.

Taking it back to her years at high school, we can imagine the girl she describes when talking about herself in interviews: shy, geeky and a bit awkward, but a natural born leader and oftentimes the brightest person in the room.

Google’s favorite girl received her education at Stanford, both for Bachelors and Masters, racking up achievements on the way. She excelled in her studies, did various sports, and even volunteered.

Having all of this in mind, it seems more than obvious why Marissa Mayer received 14 different job offers right after completing her degree at the University. The offers were quite prestigious too, including a teaching job at Carnegie Mellon University and a consulting job at McKinsey & Company.

Out of all those options, she chose Google, which set her future career and life path in a very promising direction. According to Marissa, making that choice was not easy.

As she was being overwhelmed by job offers, she gave herself a deadline and started deleting any new incoming emails. She did, however, open the email from Google by accident and the rest is history.

After spending 13 years at Google and participating in the launching of more than 100 features and products, Marissa became the CEO of Yahoo!, getting chosen over their interim CEO Ross Levinsohn.

At that point, Marissa Mayer was 38, a wife, a mother and the chief executive officer of a 30-billion-dollar company.

It’s safe to say that Mrs. Mayer is a big deal, but will she save Yahoo as the company is drowning in front of us? Is their core business really worth $0?

Four years ago the ambitious blonde came in with big plans about making Yahoo a product and media leader, but in order to keep the company going she recently had to do major changes.

Marissa fired 1700 people, which was 15% of Yahoo’s staff, and closed 5 offices in Dubai, Mexico City, Buenos Aires, Madrid, and Milan.

As Yahoo’s revenue is falling, their stock is losing value and Marissa has investors attacking her for allegedly spending $7 million on a Gatsby party, everyone is wondering what the future holds for the world’s most famous female CEO. Only time will tell.

If you liked Marissa’s Pre-Yahoo resume, then you will like Mark Zuckerberg’s Pre-Facebook one.

Montblanc M was awarded the 2016 Red Dot; Best of the Best Award in Product Design

Montblanc M was awarded the 2016 Red Dot; Best of the Best Award in Product Design

mont blanc
A new definition of writing instruments designed by Marc Newson

This year, the Montblanc M collection was awarded for the Red Dot: Best of the Best, which is the top prize in the Red Dot Award: Product Design. This prize is reserved for the best products in a category. With the launch of the Montblanc M writing instrument, the Maison demonstrates the passion for innovation that has always been part of Montblanc’s DNA, continuously pushing the boundaries of design with timelessly elegant and high-performing creations. Through its collaboration with designer Marc Newson, Montblanc has developed a new aesthetic language, capturing the spirit of the moment in a writing instrument that expresses the modernity of today and the timeless elegance of tomorrow.

Montblanc-2

For the first ever design partnership in the Maison’s long history, Montblanc has chosen to work with Marc Newson, without a doubt the most influential designer of his generation”, says Jérôme Lambert, Montblanc CEO. “Montblanc M brings together Newson’s trademark biomorphic style, defined by its fluid and pure organic forms, and Montblanc’s iconic design cues, resulting in a new and unexpected expression for writing instruments.”

pen
In an original approach to the craftsmanship with which Montblanc is synonymous, Newson brings innovative design elements to the writing experience, perfectly balancing form and function with an object that has both a rational existence and makes a bold aesthetic statement. Functionality is expressed in the ingenious use of a magnet that allows the magnetic closing of the cap and barrel, with perfect alignment of the clip to the innovative “plateau” at the barrel end. An additional snap mechanism smoothens the closure and ensures the cap remains firmly in place. For the first time ever, a Montblanc writing instrument takes on an additional function, as a Fineliner pen for technical and precision drawing.

While Newson has retained distinctive design elements of a Montblanc writing instrument including the use of black precious resin and the iconic white emblem, the shape of Montblanc M stands out with a “plateau” at the end of the writing instrument created by milling the polished black resin with a diamond tool. The fluidity of the overall design is achieved by avoiding breaks in the pure lines of the shape. Thus, the Montblanc emblem made of white precious resin is ultrasonically welded onto the plateau to form a perfectly flat surface, while the platinum-plated clip is mounted invisibly into the cap to not interrupt the design flow. For an optimal writing experience, the ruthenium-plated metal forepart engraved with “MONTBLANC”, balances the weight of the writing instrument. The AU585 gold nib of the writing instrument is plated in two tones for the first time, using both rhodium and ruthenium.

Inspired by the Maison’s heritage of sophistication, every design element comes together to deliver a multi-sensorial sensory writing experience, reflecting the discerning customer’s increasing desire to slow down, disconnect and enjoy products that bring the senses together: a piece to be seen, felt and heard all at once. “Like Montblanc, I seek to strike a balance in the design between the simplicity of the functional qualities of this product and the creation of a sensory experience in its use,” explains Marc Newson. “From the sight of the shape’s clean lines or the detailed plating of the nib, from the touch and feel of the writing instrument with its polished surface and ruthenium forepart, to the sound of the click of the cap as it is drawn to the body of the writing instrument with the magnet, Montblanc M offers a seamless writing experience that engages the senses.”

With this new generation of writing instruments, Montblanc continues to redefine the culture of writing, crafting fine lifetime companions that deliver the highest quality and unexpected cutting-edge design. Though it stands at the forefront of contemporary design today, it has been designed with the same timeless qualities as every Montblanc writing instrument. Montblanc M is available in Fountain Pen, Rollerball, Ballpoint Pen, ScreenWriter for use on touch screens and as a thin Montblanc Artfineliner for technical drawing. During the launch year only, the nib is engraved with the letters “MN” as a tribute to the designer who imagined this latest evolution in writing culture.

Montblanc M in collaboration with Marc Newson is available on September 2015 from Montblanc boutiques worldwide. For more information, visit www.montblanc.com.

BMW Proudly partners with Art Basel in Hong Kong for the 4th Year
Inaugural BMW Art Journey Winning-Artist Samson Young’s Sound Journey
“So You Are Old by the Time You Reach the Island”
#2 BMW Art Car by Frank Stella (1976).
#bmwartcar #animateyourlife #bmwartjourney #bmwhk

The BMW Group has been a patron of arts and culture around the world for over forty years, and this year, BMW is once again a proud partner of the top modern and contemporary art show in Asia – Art Basel in Hong Kong. For the 4th year as a partner, BMW highlights the latest work of Samson Young – Hong Kong based artist and the inaugural BMW Art Journey winner – “For Whom the Bell Tolls”. Young will also premiere another artwork “So You Are Old by the Time You Reach the Island” multi-media walk tomorrow (24 March 2016). Furthermore, BMW displayd the BMW Art Car designed by American artist Frank Stella at their lounge on Level 3 Concourse of the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. As second “rolling sculpture” in the collection, Stella’s BMW Art Car celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, being designed in 1976 – just one year after Alexander Calder had created the series’ founding model. The BMW Lounge also features an interactive zone “Animate Your Life”, where visitors can take photos with the BMW Art Car and create a dynamic GIF file using digital technology.

Today, BMW has a media announcement of the shortlist of artists, which are Abigail Reynolds,Newsha Tavakolian and Alvin Zafra. The winner will be announced in early summer 2016. Besides, BMW also participates in this year’s Art Basel in Hong Kong as the event’s Official Automotive Partner, escorting VIP guests during the event in a fleet of luxurious all-new BMW 7 Series sedans.

BMW Art Journey: Display of Samson Young’s Project “For Whom the Bell Tolls”.

Launched last year, the BMW Art Journey is a new global art initiative by BMW and Art Basel offering artists an opportunity to undertake a journey of creative discovery.

BMW Art Car (#02 by Frank Stella)

CNN’s global portal identified Samson Young as one of the “Top 20 People to Watch in Hong Kong” and in 2013 he was named “Best Artist of the Year” in the Media Art category by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council. Last year, his project “For Whom the Bell Tolls” won him the inaugural BMW Art Journey. The project has become the exhibition highlight in the BMW Lounge. Graduated from Princeton University with a Ph.D. in Music Composition, Young studied culture and philosophy. For his BMW Art Journey he chose iconic bells from various cultures and religions as his central theme. In the time before modern communication technology, bells served as an important means of communication. The auditory coverage of bells also defined territories; the abduction of bells on the other hand – often involving violent conflicts – aroused fierce animosities, and individual’s sense of belonging is greatly disturbed by such events. On his 60-day journey, Young traversed 11 countries in five continents: Austria (Vienna and Innsbruck), USA (LA & Clemson University), Australia (Darlington Point), Kenya (Mombasa), Morocco (Fez), Sicily (Licata), St. Petersburg, France (Cantal), Germany (Nuremberg) & Poland (Bydgoszcz), London and Myanmar (Mandalay).

“All the bells I recorded on my trip have a connection with conflict. In history writing, for example, the sounds of war are seldom described or recorded. That may be because sound is pure experience which doesn’t convey any information or hard facts. Yet it is sound that actually transports us into the midst of events.” Young compiled an extensive  archive of bell recordings and a series of bell sound sketches on paper. Visitors of the BMW Lounge can explore sound samples of Young’s archive generously supported by Bowers & Wilkins headphones.

Each participant will receive a portable media player and Bowers & Wilkins headphones along with a bag holding various small objects, maps and instructions necessary to complete the journey. Walking individually or in groups, over the course of the next hour the participants will be led to a series of iconic and obscure locations in Hong Kong, where they will experience pre-recorded films and sounds, live actions and performances that had been painstakingly orchestrated by Samson Young and his performers and collaborators, including jazz vocalist Michael Schiefel, who contributed many of his original songs and plays one of the many mysterious characters that the audience will encounter during this walk.

Timeless BMW Art Car #02 by Frank Stella.

Since 1975, renowned artists have been letting their creativity run loose using BMW vehicles as their canvas. The BMW Art Car Collection now contains 17 unique pieces, each of them designed by world-renowned artists. Every year, BMW Group selects one vehicle from the Collection to be displayed at Art Basel in Hong Kong; this year, BMW presents the #02 BMW Art Car, designed by American minimalist artist Frank Stella in 1976. Having been subjected to a grueling Le Mans 24-hour race, Stella devised a black and white design based on oversize graph paper on the BMW classic racecar BMW 3.0 CSL. Stella considers his design is a kind of blueprint applied to the entire body of the car, through which the aesthetics of the vehicle structure can be fully expressed and appreciated.

An exhibition of his work was held at the Museum of Modern Art at the young age of 23. In the 1960s, he began working with metallic paint and deviated from the rectangular canvas using aluminum and copper surfaces as his canvases, for which he was given critical acclaim. Between the 1960’s to 1980s, Stella’s work was displayed around the world, and became hotly pursued on the market and at various auctions. Now at the age of 79, Stella insists on continuing to work on a daily basis in his workshop, and is one of the most well-known American artists. A major retrospective of his work was recently held at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York (Oct 30, 2015–Feb 7, 2016).

Swarovski to Bring Sundew Installation by Elaine Yan Ling Ng to Art Central 2016

Swarovski to Bring Sundew Installation by Elaine Yan Ling Ng to Art Central 2016

SWAROVSKI BRINGS SUNDEW INSTALLATION BY

ELAINE YAN LING NG TO ART CENTRAL 2016

Hong Kong, March 2016Swarovski will unveil ‘Sundew’, a spectacular kinetic crystal installation by British Chinese Designer Elaine Yan Ling Ng at the 2016 edition of Art Central set to be held 23-26 March (First Night 21 March, VIP preview 22 March) 2016. Exhibited at Hong Kong’s Central Harbourfront, ‘Sundew’ will represent Swarovski’s second successive partnership with Art Central, part of Hong Kong Art Week.

With ‘Sundew’, Hong Kong-based artist Elaine Yan Ling Ng brings her unique approach to design, encompassing textiles, electronics, biomimicry and interiors to create a highly interactive presentation. Taking inspiration from nature, craft and technology, Ng has created interactive objects that mimic the exotic ‘Sundew’, a carnivorous plant that attracts its prey with scent and reflected light.

The installation features hand-fabricated textiles combining natural fibers and 316m of Swarovski crystal fabric (approximately 20 million crystals), and lures audiences in, trapping them with mesmerising displays of light, fragrance and movement.

Founder of Hong Kong-based bespoke textile consultancy The Fabrick Lab, Elaine Yan Ling Ng was unveiled as one of the 2015 Swarovski Designers of the Future at Salone del Mobile in Milan in April last year, an award that acknowledges emerging studios and designers who are actively expanding design culture through experimentation with cutting-edge technologies. As part of the collaboration with Swarovski, Elaine unveiled the first rendition of “Sundew” at this year’s Design Miami/Basel.

Elaine Yan Ling Ng says, “After visiting Swarovski’s head office in Wattens, Austria I now regard crystal as an ingredient for making new material, texture and surfaces and for this project it’s exciting to be combining craft and technology to explore new functions.”

Nadja Swarovski, Member of the Swarovski Executive Board, commented: “We are delighted to bring Elaine Yan Ling Ng’s ‘Sundew’ to Asia for the first time. This mesmerising installation debuted at Design Miami/ Basel in June 2015 for the inaugural Swarovski Designers of the Future Award. Swarovski is committed to supporting emerging talent across the various creative industries and it is our pleasure to present Elaine’s work at the second edition of Art Central and to participate in this vibrant celebration of contemporary art and culture.” Prominently displayed in the main entrance at Art Central 2016, Sundew is a stunning sound activated kinetic presentation combining handmade textiles, biomimicry and Swarovski crystal fabric. The installation is inspired by the carnivorous sundew plant which uses scent to attract its prey before encircling it in a deadly grip.

Fair’s distinctly Asian edge celebrates Hong Kong as a global centre for contemporary art

Art Central 2016 - Exterior (3)

Art Central 2016 - Exterior (1)

(Hong Kong, 21 March 2016) Art Central, Hong Kong’s contemporary art fair with an Asian edge has been unveiled, with over 100 galleries from 21 countries, 75% hailing from greater Asia. The fair officially kicks off with First Night, one of the most anticipated events on Hong Kong’s cultural calendar, before opening to the public from 23-26 March (VIP Preview 22 March). A site of discovery, the fair boasts a strong gallery line-up and presents over 500 emerging and established artists from Asia and around the world. Housed within the city’s largest ever bespoke temporary structure, the fair presents a dynamic program that includes interactive installations, engaging panel discussions, experimental film and performance art alongside Hong Kong’s hottest restaurants. Art Central 2016 will engage all from seasoned collectors and avid art enthusiasts to families and students.

Art Central 2016 - Interior

Launched in 2015, Art Central’s debut added a fresh new dimension to Hong Kong Art Week and was embraced by the Hong Kong public, and international collectors and buyers alike. The second edition brings a distinctly Asian edge as it presents the next generation of talent alongside some of the more established names in contemporary art, further elevating Hong Kong as an international arts destination.

Tim Etchells, Co-Founder of Art Central and ART HK, (which subsequently has become Art Basel in Hong Kong) says, “We are truly proud of what Art Central has achieved in helping to further promote Hong Kong as a global arts hub. The success of the inaugural edition proved that Hong Kong was ready for a complementary fair and an Art Week that rivals the likes of London, New York and Miami. What we have created is a parallel fair unlike any other; presented to the very highest of standards. We look forward to redefining expectations with our second edition and continuing to solidify Hong Kong’s place as the global centre for contemporary Asian art.”

Maree Di Pasquale, Fair Director, says, “Art Central 2016 has been designed to push boundaries and transcend the traditional art fair experience. From site-specific installations and entertaining yet at times hard-hitting performance art, to a world-class talks program and some of Hong Kong’s most exciting new restaurants, the fair’s second edition has raised the bar with an ambitious program that appeals to both the connoisseur collector and art enthusiast alike.”

“Art Central shares strong foundations with Hong Kong’s art industry and we truly believe in Hong Kong’s standing as the international centre for Asian art. Taking place during a now internationally recognised Art Week, Art Central 2016 will help to further define Hong Kong as a catalyst for arts and culture globally, said Maree.”

“It is fantastic to have such a strong line of partners involved this year, from Swarovski who is presenting an incredible kinetic installation ‘Sundew’ by the Swarovski Young Designers of the Future winner Elaine Yan Ling Ng, to J.Crew’s RISE Award putting the spotlight on the next generation of artistic talent. It is truly great to see the commitment of Hong Kong businesses across so many sectors to supporting the arts,” said Maree.

Along with museum quality works and cutting-edge programming, food and socialising are key ingredients to the Art Central experience. From Neo-Parisian dishes in the city’s most coveted new restaurant, Belon, to relaxing in the Street Food area while listening to a live DJ and enjoying a drink at Guru Jimmy’s Absolut Ashram of Spirituality (2016 Absolut Art Bar), Art Central will have guests lingering as they enjoy Art Central’s take on flavour and style.

New this year is the fair’s first exhibition of digital, new media and performance art supported by Official Champagne Partner, G.H. Mumm. MEDIA X MUMM features five daring and thought-provoking new media art installations with strong thematic elements that challenge visitors to explore the realms of new media art and question perceptions of artistic expression. The experimental art space The Container, a contemporary gallery in Nakameguro, Tokyo, has been replicated and constructed in the Street Food area. One of the four specially curated projects is Jack McLean’s Empty Headed Landscapes which presents works from three different, nonetheless related, bodies of work that include large-scale drawings and live performance. The theme of his work is acceptance of the futility of human endeavour, a delight in the absurdity of the human species and an emphasis on humour as a collective point of access.

Another new addition to the fair, SCREEN X EXPERIMENTA is curated by Hong Kong’s own Gina Wong and presents a diverse program of experimental and narrative film from emerging talent from Asia and the world. Screened for one hour each day of the fair, three different thematic streams – World Drama, Poetry and Stage – explore a diverse range of curatorial themes and techniques in experimental cinema and promise to challenge and entertain audiences.

A site for discovery and education, Art Central has provided a platform for some of the region’s most active non-profit spaces, publications and curators, to develop programming that engages the fairgoer in fun and sometimes challenging ways. New for 2016 is 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art (Sydney) hosting ROUNDTABLE X 4A, a series of discussions, interviews, and performances that focus on artistic and curatorial practices from across Asia and the Pacific. The interactive program also features new performances by artists Frances Barrett, Abdullah M.I. Syed and Latai Taumoepea, each of which reflect on the context of contemporary art in Asia. The Flying Buck by Abdullah M.I. Syed brings to the fore inherent narratives of institutionalism, capitalism and consumer culture, particularly in the context of the art market and the force of economic powers within.

Tickets to Art Central are available for sale online via HK Ticketing with two for one on advanced tickets available now.

Almost all are done manually and the main steps to assembling the brush are mixing the hairs, trimming and shaping the hairs, aligning the tips, refining the hairs, attaching the brush heads to the handles, and quality control.

Art Central’s ‘First Night’ is one of the hottest tickets in town

In just one week, the second edition of Art Central will be unveiled during Hong Kong Art Week. Adding a fresh new dimension, Art Central kicks off with ‘First Night’ which gives collectors and art enthusiasts a first glimpse of the fair.

Art Central returns to the Central Harbourfront from 23-26 March (First Night 21 March, VIP Preview 22 March), showcasing over 100 galleries from 21 countries with 75% hailing from greater Asia. A fair with a distinctly Asian edge, the gallery list is complemented by an ambitious program that includes large-scale installations, engaging panel discussions and performance art, along with some of Hong Kong’s hottest eateries. A site of discovery for both art lovers and seasoned collectors alike, Art Central 2016 is set to raise the bar with Hong Kong’s most dynamic art fair experience.

Maree Di Pasquale, Fair Director, says “The inaugural Art Central cemented itself as a highlight of the annual art calendar, exceeding expectations on all fronts. Embraced both locally and internationally, Art Central has helped to further establish Hong Kong as a global arts destination, with an Art Week that rivals the likes of London, Paris and Miami.”

“Art Central 2016 will present a strong selection of museum quality works alongside some of the most exciting emerging artists from the region and around the world. With increased representation from Asia and an expanded public program that promises to engage and entertain, Art Central has everyone from the art-loving public to the seasoned collector in mind”.

Art Central’s ‘First Night’ will offer a first glimpse of the fair from 5pm – 9pm on Monday 21 March, and will mark the first time the fair opens to the public at night. Tickets (available via artcentralhongkong.com) give visitors a chance to celebrate the launch of the fair’s second edition with an evening of art and performance set against the magnificent backdrop of the iconic Victoria Harbour.

Also new for 2016 are three curated projects, MEDIA X MUMM in partnership with G.H Mumm Champagne,ROUNDTABLE X 4A (curated by 4A Centre for Contemporary Art, Sydney) and SCREEN X EXPERIMENTA(curated by Gina Wong Director of Experimenta, Hong Kong). Projects present new media, digital, and live art (MEDIA X MUMM); an engaging discussion, interactive roundtable and performance series (ROUNDTABLE X 4A); and a curated platform for emerging experimental and narrative motion picture filmmakers (SCREEN X EXPERIMENTIA).

“Along with a strong line up of galleries that includes many new leading international names, Art Central also plays host to some of Art Week’s best restaurants and bars as it highlights the social element of Art Week” said Maree.

The fair’s second edition showcases Hong Kong’s hottest new eatery Belon, the neo-Parisian bistro helmed by the rising culinary star, James Henry. Also new to the fair is the MEDIA X MUMM CHAMPAGNE BAR by official Champagne partner, G.H.Mumm, and an expanded Street Food area which includes the 2016 Absolut Art Bar (The Absolut Ashram of Guru Jimmy).

ghd adds a taste of the tropics for CÉ LA VI’s ladies night this April
Hong Kong, 25 February 2016

This April, ghd and Cé La Vi will be joining forces to put on a ladies night like no other. Not only will the champagne be flowing every Wednesday in April; ghd will have its Styling Team on hand to transform your hair with this season’s hottest styles. Speaking of hot… ghd Style Squad will be using the new limited edition styler collection, the Azores, which is named after the Portuguese tropical islands, to style the hair for ladies and heating things up with its take on the tropics.

The ghd styling stations at Hong Kong’s hippest nightspot will transform tresses with the new Azores styler, which is available in three pearlescent shades inspired by the stunning landscapes of the Azores islands. Choose from serene pearl, atlantic jade and marine allure, to create beach waves, bouncy curls or ghd’s signature straight look. Once you are picture-perfect, snap your beach babe look at the photo booth and show off instantly on social media with #ghdxcelavi to make sure your fellow girlfriends are not missing out.

If free champagne for the first 100 girls to walk through the door plus a mini makeover courtesy of ghd was not enough, ghd will be giving away a coveted collection of products to the value of over HK$10,000 each and every Wednesday in April. All you need to do is show up and add your name to the lucky draw and you could be the one going home with a ghd style kit, which includes the new limited edition Azores styler as well as all the other ghd essentials to recreate your own party-ready hair at home with ease.

ISABEL MARANT
NEW STORE OPENING
AT FASHION WALK, CAUSEWAY BAY

Screen Shot 2016-03-11 at 11.09.48 am

The French fashion label ISABEL MARANT is thrilled to announce its new store opening in Fashion Walk. Each ISABEL MARANT boutique is treated as a unique piece of architecture and design that feeds off the local micro-culture. This thought process was developed by the ISABEL MARANT Fashion House and Franklin Azzi Architecture studios in order to enhance and flavor design and architectural creativity, research and development. This second ISABEL MARANT store in Hong Kong is located in the area of Causeway Bay, which is an historical anchor point for the brand.

The 90-square-meter single-storey boutique is situated at the apex of two streets, providing plenty of natural light into the store. The concrete facade includes an intimate homely entrance with a welcoming planter and lighting sconces. Inside the boutique, the facade material is duplicated on the floor streamlining the concept from exterior to interior. The space is emphasized by a suspended ceiling made out of raw wooden cleats, clearly defining the ISABEL MARANT and ETOILE areas.

To celebrate the ISABEL MARANT new-store grand opening, a fun-filled block party was held on Wednesday, March 9, 2016. Enjoying the ISABEL MARANT experience were popular Hong Kong fashionistas Angie NgCara G, Cindy Ko and Rebecca Jessie McGeoch, who joined other press and fashionista guests at this exclusive fashion moment.

8½ Otto e Mezzo BOMBANA – Music for the Palate: Delicious to hear, Melodic to taste

Screen Shot 2016-03-10 at 5.19.26 pm

A rare and unprecedented Italian Feast with a performance by acclaimed violinist Gian Paolo Peloso at 8½ Otto e Mezzo BOMBANA

It is an artistic collaboration of the highest order! Chef BOMBANA Umberto has invited international renowned violinist Gian Paolo Peloso to perform, on his rare 1755 Italian violin, selected music masterpieces at a unique event showcasing Italian artistic excellence next month. This one time only dinner will bring together great Food, Wine, Art and Music on 10 April 2016 at 7 pm in the cozy lounge of 8½ Otto e Mezzo BOMBANA, the fine dining Italian restaurant led by Chef BOMBANA in Hong Kong Landmark. The exceptional Italian dinner is an unprecedented meeting of Italian cuisine and culture between the three-star Michelin Chef and the world-class talented artist.

Screen Shot 2016-03-10 at 5.18.33 pm

Regarded as one of the finest Italian violinists and musicians, Peloso carries a youthful spirit bringing his exotic music to Hong Kong. He has worked under some of the 20th century’s greatest conductors including Ruggiero Ricci, Ivry Gitlis, Igor Ozim, Gérard Poulet and Viktor Pikaisen, and composer Luciano Berio. Peloso has performed as a soloist with orchestras, in recitals and chamber music concerts around the world. His impressive talent was recognized with his appointment as Violin Professor at the Conservatory of Music (University) of Neuchâtel, Switzerland. He has also given master classes in Italy and Hong Kong. The legendary violinist Ivry Gitlis says, “I respect and love (Peloso): a true musician of the highest quality as a soloist and chamber music performer, and a top class violin teacher. An honor of our profession and its future.” In the upcoming dinner, Peloso will perform four pieces: Preludio and Ciaccona by Johann Sebastian Bach, and Variation One String on a Theme and Caprices by violinist Niccolò Paganini.

Under the culinary direction of three-star Michelin Chef Umberto BOMBANA, 8½ Otto e Mezzo BOMBANA will delight the gourmet’s palate with a special menu highlighting his unique, sophisticated yet contemporary culinary creations. The “Music for the Palate” dinner includes a welcome drink, followed by a crafted 6-course wine pairing meal featuring sublime and subtle aromatics, enhancing the complex yet delicate taste of the dishes.

  1. Culatello Spigaroli, Riserva Giuseppe Verdi Nero di Parma (pairing with 2008 Ferrari, Perlé Rosé).
  2. Dover Sole, champagne citrus sauce with calvisius elite caviar and couscous (serving with 2014 Jankara, Vermentino di Gallura).
  3. Maccheroni Alla Norma with baby eggplant, datterino tomato, ricotta cheese and basil (matching with 2010 Benanti, Pietramarina Etna Bianco).
  4. Poularde from Bresse with green gnocchi, sweet peas and morel mushroom (pairing with 2004 Ceretto, Barbaresco Bricco Asili).
  5. Veal Tenderloin “Rossini” Style with veal tongue, foie gras, Barolo wine sauce and “melanosporum” black truffle (pairing with 2008 Casanova di Neri, Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova).
  6. Torta “Guglielmo Tell” with apple tarte, raisin rum ice cream (fusing with 2012 Umani Ronchi, Maximo Sauvignon).

About the composers
Known as “the musical giant” in the 18th century, Johann Sebastian Bach created famous concertos for orchestras, dance suites and sonatas for multiple instruments, including “Toccata and Fugue in D minor”, “Mass in B minor”, “Brandenburg Concertos” and “The Well-Tempered Clavier”. The magnificent classical composer is revered through ages for his work’s musical complexities, stylistic innovations and artistic beauty in the late Baroque Period. Today, he remains one of the greatest Western composers in the music history.

Sometimes called “the Devil’s Violinist”, Niccolò Paganini’s virtuous talent, accompanied by his extraordinary dexterity and flexibility, gave him an almost mysterious and mythic reputation. The Italian virtuoso violinist may be a perfect example of nature meets nurture. Being taught by his father and tutored by the best teachers, Paganini was considered a prodigy. Best known for his ferocity and extraordinary flexibility, coupled with his elongated fingers, Niccolò Paganini is considered by many to be the greatest violinist of all time.

About Chef BOMBANA Umberto
Owner and Executive Chef BOMBANA Umberto, also hailed as “The King of White Truffles” and “Best Italian Chef in Asia”, delights even the most refined palate with his contemporary, sophisticated and inventive culinary creations. In 2012, his empire extended to China where he opened 8½ Otto e Mezzo BOMBANA Shanghai and in 2013, Opera BOMBANA was unveiled in Beijing. In 2015, 8½ Otto e Mezzo BOMBANA Galaxy Macau was opened that marks his new milestone offers a more defined and unique interpretation of great Italian food to the region.

Art Basel and BMW are pleased to announce that Samson Young will present a New Artwork

Art Basel and BMW are pleased to announce that Samson Young will present a New Artwork

Art Basel and BMW are pleased to announce that Samson Young, Hong Kong sound artist and winner of the first BMW Art Journey, will present a new public artwork during Art Basel’s Hong Kong show this year. Titled ‘So You Are Old by the Time You Reach the Island’, the piece will take the form of a multi-media walk that will lead participants on a journey through the streets of the Admiralty and Wan Chai districts in Hong Kong. Offering a time and site-specific experience, the work weaves together institutional histories of place with fictional and personal narratives, all through films, audio tracks, on-site FM radio broadcasts, live actions, and installation elements dispersed along the route.

The multi-media walk adds a new chapter to ‘For Whom the Bell Tolls’, an ongoing project the artist developed on his BMW Art Journey in 2015. The artist’s journey centered on bells, both as sonorous objects and as ideological, political, and religious emblems of their respective communities. On a sixty-day trip around the globe, Samson Young researched and recorded numerous bells, compiling an extensive archive of bell recordings and a series of bell sound sketches on paper. The recordings and interviews collected over the journey will be a major aspect of the multi-media walk.

‘During my 2015 BMW Art Journey, I traveled to eleven countries on five continents, frequently alone,’ said the artist. ‘So now it is all the more exciting to add this new dimension to the journey, in the city I call my home, surrounded by friends, artistic collaborators, and visitors. In the past year, I have developed a deeper appreciation for the cultural and psychological meanings of travel, and I hope that though this experience, participants in the sound walk will share this understanding.’

By enabling the winning artist to go on their own journey of creative discovery, the BMW Art Journey functions as a mobile studio that can take artists almost anywhere in the world – to develop new ideas, discover new themes, and envision new creative projects.

Additional information about ‘So You Are Old by the Time You Reach the Island’, Samson Young, and his BMW Art Journey can be found at bmw-art-journey.com.

Shore Launches Refined A La Carte Menu and Lunch Service to Greet the Changing Seasons

Shore Launches Refined A La Carte Menu and Lunch Service to Greet the Changing Seasons

Screen Shot 2016-03-10 at 4.55.17 pm

Warmer weather is coming back and with it comes a time for new beginnings, or sometimes, to revisit your roots. With that in mind, Shore has refined its a la carte menu with seasonal quality and the ultimate in customer value without compromising the standards that have made this steakhouse a beloved regular since its launch in 2010. Hong Kong’s signature purveyor of in-house dry-aged steaks is all about giving value back to our loyal diners this spring and beyond.

Rustic, honest preparation is all that is required when fine, engaging ingredients are sourced. Shore has always taken this approach to heart in allowing the individual elements of a dish to speak for its own quality. Served from March 7, Shore’s new a la carte menu has amplified its use of refined ingredients with great freshness and vibrancy at its core. However, we understand loyalty and the importance of seeing familiar favourites on the menu, which is why many popular dishes remain in their original forms.

Australian, Black Angus Striploin grass fed 澳洲黑安格斯前腰脊肉$388

So What’s On the Menu?

You can still delight in some of the finest dry-aged beef in Hong Kong at Shore, along with premium cuts such as the 40oz. Tomahawk and the grain-fed Prime Tenderloins and Rib Eyes. What’s new to the table is Shore shining a spotlight on underrated cuts of beef that are bursting with flavour and unheralded quality, if prepared by a skilful hand (like ours). The new US Black Angus Skirt Steak $288 is tremendous value for money and often underappreciated. It boasts intense depth of flavour and a gorgeous texture that releases more and more flavour with each delectable bite. The world of grass-fed beef has also joined the new a la carte menu at Shore with a pair of famed Australian producers providing the goods. Nutty and succulent with an unmistakably delightful earthy undercurrent, the Australian Black Angus Striploin $388 and King Island Rib Eye $398 are about as good as grass-fed beef gets.

Staying at the grill, we explore new options for those with a decidedly less beefy outlook on life. Always mindful of varying preferences, Shore’s menu has something for everyone. Wet-aged on the bone, the US Pork Loin Chop $308 and the US Cedar Spring Lamb T-bone $399 are tender to the extreme with great texture and deeply developed flavour profiles. Away from the grill, the Smoked Beetroot and Pear Salad $118 is spring on a plate, garnished with feta cheese, toasted hazelnuts and watercress with a zesty orange and mint dressing. The Pot-roasted Free Range Chicken $278 is countryside comfort defined with delectable foie gras, morels, brussels sprouts and chestnuts providing the supporting elements of flavour. From the world of seafood is an incredible treat in the form of the Lobster Risotto $398, featuring fine saffron, mussels, spice-laden chorizo, peas and tomatoes in a hearty and sumptuously balanced dish for sharing. Throughout the new menu, you’ll find fresh seasonal greens, spring fruits of zesty appeal and many deft final touches that mark the return of spring by delicately lifting dishes to another level.

On the sweet side of endings, Shore’s Madagascar Vanilla Panna Cotta $88 is every bit as silky, creamy, lightly refreshing and delightful as it sounds, served with apple jelly and a crisp almond tuile. If you fancy something slightly more indulgent, the Banana Caramel Tart $88 was made for you and served with a smooth peanut butter cream and a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Spring Bloom and Time For Action: Grassroots Pantry Dedicates March to the World with Earth Hour Dinner by Candlelight, Easter Specials and Documentary Nights Galore!

 Interior 02

Spring is our time of power at Grassroots Pantry, purveyors of delightful plant-based cooking, rustic hospitality and innovative cuisine. We try to be more than a restaurant at Grassroots, and everything we do comes with a hope that we can help make our world a better place. With that in mind, we’ve dedicated the month of March to raising awareness for the state of our earth. And what better way to spread the word than with food, glorious food? It’s the best way into our hearts, and right now Mother Nature needs a helping hand more than ever before!

Grassroots’ Annual Earth Hour Night Returns with Dinner by Candlelight!

We often use candles to set the mood, but seldom do we truly have to rely on them. There’s no better time to remind us of our dependency on electricity than Earth Hour! As eco-minded souls shut the lights for an hour, Grassroots Pantry takes it a step further and drops the electrics for an entire evening of service on March 19! What a picturesque and timeless scene it promises to be with flickering candlelight and warm smiles all around a delightful meal. Acoustic guitarists (of worth) are welcome to play a tune.

How will we cook without electricity? How will we leave the tiniest carbon footprint possible while providing a delectable evening of service? Good questions, and that’s why the Grassroots Pantry Earth Hour 3-course Dinner will be all about RAW. We’ll begin our delectable raw adventure early at 5:30pm for proactive dinner-seekers, and extend our service through the evening!

Peggy Chan

Starting off with a cocktail that sounds as gorgeous as it tastes is the organic Blue Blue Moon, featuring Crop cucumber vodka, chai spice, muddled cucumber and blue juice (purple cabbage) in a refreshingly balanced opening act. We’ll also be serving Dehydrated Nibbles, a fabulously deconstructed Raw “BLT” Salad, the tingling Bell Pepper Cashew Alfredo and the sublime sweet treat of Cookies and Coconut Kefir Cream!

The Earth Hour 3-course Raw Dinner is priced at $550 (+10%) per person, with Raw Truffles and Macarons as petit fours to finish and help you linger lovingly by eco-friendly candlelight.

Grassroots Pantry Presents Cooked by Michael Pollan – a Delicious 3-part Documentary Screening:

Movie night is a bit of a tradition at the old Grassroots, and we’re bringing it back in fine style. With Michael Pollan’s Cooked, a four-part documentary that calls for people to rediscover the passion for culinary practices at home, we have a fine muse to help remind our guests of an important message: taking control of your health through time in the kitchen is the best thing you could do for your well-being. Only through personal responsibility and doing it ourselves will we learn to respect food sourcing and responsible practices. It’s exactly what Grassroots Pantry was created to inspire.

For each of the three screenings, we’ll provide a package of delightful, unlimited screening bites and snacks! This includes the crisp and delectably comforting Brown Rice Arancini, the can’t-stop Hedgehog Mushroom Popcorn with barbecue sauce and the gorgeous Granola Clusters, along with a refreshing complimentary beverage and the screening itself for $250 per person. Each session will also feature a member of the green industry curating the event with our own Peggy Chan leading a discussion after viewing.

Session One: Dinner and a Movie on April 2nd!
Screening for chapter one of Cooked will be held on the evening of Saturday, April 2nd! Come for dinner at Grassroots and stay for a discounted ticket to the screening, starting around 9:30pm.

Session Two: Weekday Happy Hour on April 13th!
Chapter two will be screened on the evening of Wednesday, April 13th! Drop by Grassroots for a mingle and a drink (or two) before continuing this thought-provoking personal journey with Michael Pollan.

Session Three: The Double-header on April 22nd!
Finales are always better when they’re twice as long (and on a Friday), and Grassroots duly delivers! Chapters three AND four of Cooked will be screened as a back-to-back double feature on the evening of Friday, April 22nd!

Advanced Package Deal:
Buy your tickets in bulk, friends! You’ll get a great discount if you purchase a package deal for all three screenings of Cooked for just $650!

Raw 'BLT' Salad

Easter Weekend Brunch Specials:
Despite the whole bunny-and-chocolate thing, we also enjoy the simple pleasures of a relaxing Easter weekend and that’s why we’ve created a couple of Easter Brunch Specials! After all, Grassroots Pantry was designed with ultimate homespun comfort in mind, and Easter is a fine time to be comfortable over an idyllic, lingering lunch.

The Smoked Carrot, Fennel and Dill Salad ($98) is the definition of skilled pairing for herb and vegetable alike, with smoked cured carrot, shaved fennel and radish, dill and arugula all combining to lift one another to a higher place, dressed with lemon garlic olive oil and served with toasted sourdough. Cocotte ($90) combines a farmhouse-inspired baked medley of free-range eggs, artichoke, mixed mushrooms, asparagus and zucchini cream in a beautifully comforting dish with sourdough soldiers, aquaponic green salad and lemon garlic olive oil. The Deviled Eggs ($68) are an all-time breakfast classic – Grassroots-style – featuring free-range eggs, a silky cashew hollandaise, smoked paprika almond croutons and chervil. And finally, a dessert for sore eyes in the form of the moist and heavenly Carrot Walnut Cake with Lemon Ricotta Cashew Frosting ($78).

Spring and the month of March is dedicated to planet earth, the only home we’ve ever known. Come to Grassroots Pantry and enjoy with us a time of awareness and honouring Mother Nature, always with great homespun food as our greatest muse.

6IXTY8IGHT – Spring 2016 Wonderland

six8
Join the whimsical escape to a 6IXTY8IGHT “Wonderland” in Spring 2016. Whether galloping off into the stars on your magical unicorn or enjoying a ride of cuteness overload with your pet pug in tow, March fully embraces an energetic vibe, rainbow-coloured happiness and futuristic dreaming.

In typical 6IXTY8IGHT statement style, the unicorn plays a key role in graphic imagery, alongside key words such as “magical”, “believe” and “day dream”. The unicorn’s grandeur is contrasted with the humour of the wide-eyed pug — with both characters adorning the latest lingerie range.

Tuned into Spring 2016’s fashion trends, the casual-wear collection combines sugary cuteness and powdery colours with soft-textured yarns and photo graphics to present surreal imagery. Fun print tees, crop tops and dresses are matched with denim vests, shorts and jeans, as well as short denim overalls.

Powdery marshmallow white and pink lead the March underwear palette for sweet girls, featured next to the Modal soft range in marl grey and powder blue for sophistication, plus a nude and black range that represents felinity.

Come on girls, let’s run away to a 6IXTY8IGHT Wonderland!

Rebecca Minkoff debuted a new and innovative model for her February show. Instead of showing the brand’s upcoming Fall 2016 collection, the brand showed an in-‐season show of SS16 products that are currently available or will be available in the next 30-‐45 days. With support from retailers, media and influencers who attended and promoted the show, they promoted full-‐price shopping and in-‐season selling while top consumers also experienced a unique, first-‐hand experience. NEW YORK, U.S.A. (February 13, 2016) – Designer Rebecca Minkoff

Appropriately enough, when it comes to breaking the mold, the inspiration behind the collection was that of the style of a modern Marianne Faithful. As a symbol of the 1960’s youthquake, she embodied a sweet rebellion and a new coming of age. The key to Rebecca’s modern Marianne Faithfull, are accessories for the tech-minded millennial, signaling a present-day youth movement. Flowing dresses, minis, geo-floral prints and mod-enamel jewelry recall London in the late 1960’s, while fringed saddle bags, clutches and crossbody phone cases lead the modern-day charge.

About Rebecca Minkoff:

With a vision of building a lifestyle brand for the “downtown romantic”, San Diego-‐ born designer Rebecca Minkoff founded her company in 2001 after she developed a small apparel line. Rebecca spent the next few years working on the small collection until 2005, when she developed the “Morning After Bag”. The bag became an overnight sensation and Rebecca began solely concentrating on developing additional styles to build out her romantically themed day-‐to-‐night handbag collection. After four years of consistent growth in accessories under her belt, Rebecca returned to her original love of apparel design and introduced a ready-‐to-‐ wear collection in 2009. New BOSE® Soundlink® Around-Ear Wireless Headphones II

New BOSE® Soundlink® Around-Ear Wireless Headphones II

Screen Shot 2016-02-29 at 12.08.38 amOctober 9, 2015 — Today, Bose introduced the SoundLink® around-ear wireless headphones II, combining the best sound quality of any wireless headphone available today with a whole new kind of wireless experience: an amazing 15 hours of battery life, multi-point for connecting two devices, quick pairing with NFC technology, seamless audio/video sync, easy switching between music and calls, and intuitive controls and voice prompts that don’t leave you guessing. They’re made for mobile — built to last and light and comfortable for all day, everyday use. The SoundLink® wireless headphones II are different than any other wireless headphones on the market, and are available now, for HK$2,280.

“We believe when you give up wires, you shouldn’t have to compromise audio performance or convenience,” said Bernice Cramer, general manager of Bose Wireless Headphones. “So, we did more than make the SoundLink II the best-sounding wireless headphones out there.  We made them the most hassle-free wireless headphones, too.  You’ll notice how great your music sounds first, and then you’ll notice that we solved all the little and big problems that no one else has.  That’s the power of great engineering — it makes the entire streaming music experience that much better.”

Bose Wireless Sound
The SoundLink® around-ear wireless headphones II use proprietary technologies, including active equalization and new volume-optimized equalization, so your music is detailed and real at any volume. There are no manufactured boosts because they’re not needed for impact. What you hear is as close as possible to what was recorded, rather than re-created or altered.

“We’ve never adjusted how a piece of music will sound when it’s reproduced because it’s not our music — it’s the artist’s music and it’s your music, and our job is to make it sound as good as it can,” said Cramer.

For calls, the SoundLink® around-ear headphones II use an advanced microphone system, HD voice and adaptive audio adjustment technology for wind or noise. Volume is changed automatically based on speech level and changing environments, letting you move from a quiet building to a busy street without missing a word or fumbling for controls.

Bose Wireless Functionality
The SoundLink® around-ear headphones II offer true wireless freedom.  It starts with up to 15 hours of battery life on a single charge — 25% more than the industry standard. If you’re in a rush or on the go, a quick 15-minute charge will provide up to two hours of play time through the included USB cable. The experience gets better from there.  With multi-point, you can stay simultaneously connected to two devices, making it possible to watch a movie or sports on your tablet, and take or make a call on your phone. And while conventional wireless headphones can have delays syncing audio and video, the SoundLink® headphones’ connection is seamless for enjoying videos or using FaceTime.  Pairing is more than easy, too. Tap the right earcup to pair for NFC-enabled devices, or just connect your Bluetooth® device via the latest Bluetooth technology. To switch between music and calls, you don’t need your phone. There are smart, intuitive controls on the headphone’s earcup that are fool-proof and one touch away. The SoundLink® headphones II also feature voice prompts (available in 11 different languages) to tell you who’s calling, what device you’re connected to, and how much battery life you have left.

Bose Wireless Quality
SoundLink® headphones were built and tested in Bose labs to survive drops, bumps and grabs.  Their design is inspired by the QC®25 headphones, and they use impact-resistant materials, glass-filled nylon and corrosion-resistant stainless steel. Despite being packed with technology, they’re light and comfortable — weighing a mere 7 ounces — with soft ear cushions and a contoured headband.  And they fold flat for storage in a matching case.

The Bose
SoundLink® Story
Bose SoundLink® products have been globally recognized for delivering the standard for mobile wireless audio since their debut in 2011, when the very first SoundLink speaker was introduced. Since then, the SoundLink speaker line has dominated the Bluetooth speaker category, and the SoundLink® Mini speaker — now in its second generation — has become the most famous little speaker in the world. In 2014, the SoundLink® on-ear Bluetooth headphones were introduced with best-in-class performance, usability and durability.  Today, the SoundLink® around-ear wireless headphones II join the family, pushing wireless music further still with even better audio and unprecedented functionality.

Pricing and Availability
The new Bose SoundLink® around-ear wireless headphones II come in two colors: Black and White.  They’re available now, for HK$2,280.  Bose SoundLink® on-ear wireless headphones will remain available for HK$2,100.  Both SoundLink® headphones are available at select authorized Bose dealers and Bose retail stores.

The jewelry is the vision of design director Francesca Amfitheatrof, who utilizes the finest diamonds and colorful gemstones to capture the brilliant world that unfolds in nature and in one breathtaking moment, bursts into an extraordinary beauty. “In this collection, we are taking you on a journey through nature. From the deep ocean, we float to the edge of the water where stillness reigns. In this world, cocooned in calm, transformation occurs. Life changes, and nature reaches to the surface and takes its first breath of air.

It’s a story about evolution and all that is possible in silence and peace, where nature plays its magic and creates the mysteries of the world we live in.”

Tiffany diamonds are among the most sought-after of these treasures. They are even more alluring in virtually invisible settings that maximize movement and play of light. Master stonecutters and setters create a wide, flexible bracelet with streams of round diamonds that flow around square-cut and pear-shape stones. Beautifully matched for color and clarity, the diamonds release an electrifying sparkle.

The artisans’ skill in mounting diamonds in ring settings underscores a tradition of craftsmanship that continues to produce the ultimate in luxury. The D color, internally flawless 8.56-carat center stone, framed with baguette and round diamonds; and a 10.25-carat stone in diamond-encrusted platinum are but two of the spectacular rings in Blue Book.

Collectors and connoisseurs covet Blue Book for its fancy color diamonds, as well. Tiffany Yellow Diamonds radiate like the sun that renews all life. Its warmth and limitless energy are reflected in rings with a 2.16-carat Fancy Intense Yellowish Green diamond and a 4.13-carat Fancy Yellow Green diamond with white diamond baguettes.  The sun shines too in a pendant’s 22.11-carat yellow sapphire, with white diamonds swirling around it like clouds. Other vibrant-color gemstones capture an ever-changing spectrum with tanzanites, tourmalines, aquamarines and diamonds. In a statement of Tiffany craftsmanship, a triple-row necklace of lush green and blue stones circles upward, with a 52.80-carat aquamarine drop.

More gemstones are mounted in lavish cocktail rings with diamonds and platinum. Like the forces of nature they are, a 6.70-carat emerald, 28.08-carat pink spinel, 20.43-carat sapphire and 19.99-carat green tourmaline unleash rich, saturated color. These mesmerizing hues are intensified by exquisite cuts and settings that lead the eye deep into the stones.

Blue Book also features brilliant creatures that evolve in myriad and wondrous ways. Among these creations are a trio of starfish in a cuff of diamonds, sapphires and tsavorites; an Octopus of diamond tentacles surrounding an outsize baroque pearl; and earrings of emerald-cut tanzanites that anchor fanciful fish of green tourmalines.

Design Director Francesca Amfitheatrof creates earrings with a pair of fish caught at the moment they leap from the ocean. Covered in blue cuprian elbaite tourmalines and diamonds, with gleaming fins of platinum, the two embellish cushion-cut tanzanites totaling 13.04 carats.

A trio of starfish reflects the mystery of the undersea world. The cuff’s diamonds, sapphires and tsavorites are seamlessly set in 18 karat white gold, creating a pattern of continuous color and elegant contours.

Tiffany Awakening
“I’ve tried to use diamonds to open our eyes to nature’s wild abundance. The jewels have an organic quality, with the cool elegance of diamonds and platinum as well as the inviting warmth of yellow diamonds and gold.”

Tiffany Evolution
“The creatures washed ashore by the tides are a rich source of inspiration for jewelry design. We tried to capture these fascinating forms in a different way to produce something unusual and unexpected—just as nature never fails to astonish us with constantly shifting colors and patterns.”

The Armor of God – Ephesians 6:10-18

The Armor of God – Ephesians 6:10-18

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.
11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.
12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.
13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.
14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place,
15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.
16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.
17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.

A Beginner’s Guide to Encryption

A Beginner’s Guide to Encryption

A-beginners-guide-to-encryption

The unfortunate truth about internet communication today is that it’s too easy for prying eyes to spy on you.

Whether or not you have something to hide, installing encryption software on your computer is the single most effective way of making sure your data remains yours.

Encryption: The Basics

What Is It?

Encryption is a way to protect information. You convert data into a format only someone with a special key may read.

What Is an Encryption Key?

It’s a string consisting of a certain number of bits. A 128 bit key consists of 128 bits. The more bits in a key, the more secure it is.

What Does It Do?

If an unauthorized person who doesn’t have the key accesses a computer or device where encrypted data is stored, they see only scrambled letters or ‘gibberish’.

How Does It Work?

To encrypt data, an algorithm is used. It works like this:

  • Plaintext
  • Key
    • Block Cipher Encryption
      • Ciphertext

What Is It For?

Personal security. Encryption stops hackers accessing your personal details. This protects you against identity theft and is especially important when using unsecure Wi-Fi networks.

How to Encrypt Data Stored on Your PC

Many types of encryption software are free and easy to download. As a word of caution, it is inadvisable to use TrueCrypt owing to a number of security problems with this particular program.

AxCrypt is a straightforward and convenient choice for Windows.

  1. Visit www.axantum.com. On the Downloads page, select the first file from the list.
  2. If you’re only after AxCrypt, uncheck any additional software it tries to install.
  3. Once installed, the program will ask you if you wish to register. It’s up to you if you’d like to be put on their mailing list or not.
  4. Right-click on the file or folder you want to encrypt. Select AxCrypt from the menu and select Encrypt to encrypt one or all of the files in the folder.
  5. Choose a passphrase. This will be the encryption key used to encrypt your data. Remember: the longer and more complicated, the better.Note: When opening your encrypted item, AxCrypt will ask you for a passphrase. Type it in and click OK. Don’t tick ‘Remember this for decryption’ as it will remember your passphrase.

If you are using a Mac, AES Crypt is an advanced, simple and free file encryption tool.

  1. Go to the AES Crypt website and download the package for Mac.
  2. Open up the zip file, un-zip it and open up the installer. Click Continue and install it as normal.
  3. If prompted, enter an admin password.
  4. Drag and drop the document you wish to encrypt into the AES Crypt app on the Dock Bar.
  5. Enter a password to encrypt the file.Your file or folder is now encrypted. To decrypt the file, simply enter the same password.

How to Encrypt Data Stored on the Cloud

Cloudfogger is an easy-to-use method for encrypting files saved to your cloud storage folders, such as Dropbox or SkyDrive.

  1. Head to cloudfogger.com and click ‘Cloudfogger Download’.
  2. Open the downloaded file and follow the install prompts.
  3. Once installed, open the program.
  4. Create an account by entering your email and a passphrase.
  5. Once registered, you can start encrypting. Right-click on the file or folder you wish to encrypt and select Cloudfogger, followed by Fogg File(s).
  6. Your file or folder is now encrypted. Click OK to confirm the protection.

How to Encrypt Your Emails

Virtru is a free email encryption service that will protect any Gmail, Outlook or Yahoo services.

It currently works as a browser extension for Chrome and Firefox, and also as a mobile app.

Here’s how to install it on your browser:

  1. Go to virtru.com and select ‘Get Virtru’.
  2. Follow the prompts to install Virtru as a browser extension.
  3. Once installed, ensure the extension is allowed on your browser.
  4. Click Install Now to complete the process.
  5. When composing a secure email, activate Virtru using the top right-hand corner box.
  6. You can easily turn Virtru off in emails by dragging the switch to the left. If switched off, the box will change to grey.Note: All recipients need to do is verify their identity to read any encrypted messages – no installation at their end is required.

Another method of email encryption is PGP (Pretty Good Privacy). However, these require a bit more technical know-how. A good option for Windows is Gpg4Win, while GPGMail is recommended for Macs.

You don’t need to be a computer wizard to start encrypting, so why delay? As well as secure browsing, encryption gives you peace of mind that your data and personal information are kept exactly as they should be: private.

How to Work Fewer Hours & Earn More Money

How to Work Fewer Hours & Earn More Money

WorkFewerHours

It’s no secret that many entrepreneurs and those working at startups are workaholics — the average successful entrepreneur works 70 hours a week. Increasingly, however, companies are finding that working fewer hours can be advantageous when it comes to workplace efficiency. In fact, working just 40 hours (or less) might improve productivity even more than those 70 hour weeks.

History of the Monday – Friday work week

  • In the early 1900s, the Ford Motor company was one of the first major businesses in America to introduce a 40-hour, Monday-Friday work week
  • Up to that point, working six, 8-hour days per week was considered normal.
  • Ford’s reason for the change was two-fold:
    • His son Edsel was quoted in the New York Times saying, “We [the Ford Motor Company] believe that in order to live properly every man should have more time to spend with his family”
    • Secondly, Henry Ford believed that well-paid workmen with more leisure time want more things, and thus buy more things (like Ford cars)

What is “Normal”?

Most can agree that working 9-5, Monday to Friday is “normal” for the average American employee, but what is considered a “normal” work week in other countries?

  • US
    • Hours per week: 47 hours
    • Average annual salary: $44,888
  • Netherlands
    • Hours per week: 29
    • Average annual salary: $47,000
  • Denmark
    • Hours per week: 33
    • Average annual salary: $46,000
  • Norway
    • Hours per week: 33
    • Average annual salary: $44,000
  • Ireland
    • Hours per week: 34
    • Average annual salary: $51,000
  • Germany
    • Hours per week: 35
    • Average annual salary: $40,000

Looking at the world’s shortest work weeks, it becomes clear that what’s “normal” is dependent on culture as much as everything else.

  • In Japan, for example, death from overwork is such a problem they have a word for it: karoshi

US Companies That Encourage Working Less

These American companies are already exploring the idea of a shorter work week (or at least making sure no one works past 40 hours)

  • Treehouse — An online education website that teaches coding and app design
    • Work week: Mon-Thu, 9am-6pm, 32 hours a week
    • Founded: 2011
    • Worth: $10 million in yearly sales
    • From Ryan Carson, cofounder of the company: “Thirty-two hours of higher quality work is better than 40 hours of lower quality work.”
  • Basecamp — The company behind the Basecamp online collaboration and project management tool
    • Work week: 32 hours a week from May through October
    • Founded: 1999
    • Worth: Basecamp doesn’t disclose revenues or profits, but both are in the millions
    • From Jason Fried, founder of the company: “When there’s less time to work, you waste less time. When you have a compressed work week, you tend to focus on what’s important. Constraining time encourages quality time.”
  • BambooHR — The company responsible for online HR management software
    • Work week: 40 hours
    • Founded: 2008
    • Worth: $10 million in yearly revenue, as of February 2014
    • To make the most out of their 40-hour weeks, the company teaches employees to:
      • Limit interruptions like emails or meetings
      • Use tele-meeting programs rather than meeting people in person
      • Let clients know when they’ll be unavailable to make sure problems get solved on work time

Ways to implement shorter work weeks

There are many strategies for companies that want to implement a shorter work week. Here are a few to try:

  • Four 10-hour days
    • Pros: Still get 40 hours in per week and an extra day for the weekend
    • Cons: Longer days mean more distractions
      • The more hours an employee works, the more opportunities for distractions arise, leading to greater stress and frustration.
  • Offset Schedules (some work Mon-Thu, others Tue-Fri)
    • Pros: Someone is in the office every day of the week
    • Cons: More difficult to communicate between people whose schedules don’t line up.
  • 9-hour days, biweekly days off
    • Pros: Most employees will be working the full week
    • Cons: Scheduling days off (if they aren’t regular), can become problematic

Disadvantages to Shorter Work Weeks

There are a host of benefits to working shorter weeks, but it’s not for every company. Here are some reasons not to make the switch:

  • Difficulty meeting customer needs
    • The state of Utah went back to traditional Mon-Fri weeks after three years of 4-day weeks
      • Residents complained that services weren’t available on certain days
  • Longer days
    • For companies that choose to do 9 or 10 hour days, this can be physically and mentally draining for employees
  • Attaining work-life balance
    • Employees may find it difficult to compact five days of work into just four days

Benefits of a Shorter Work Week

The following benefits should tempt any company thinking about making the switch to shorter work weeks–especially startups, where every edge they can get on the competition can be the thing that makes or breaks their company:

  • More efficiency
    • Time the average worker wastes during an 8-hour shift: 2 hours
      • Employees need to be more efficient to accomplish more work in less time
  • Less time off
    • State employees in Utah switched over to four, 10-hour days in 2009
      • Employees took 9% less time off than in the past 2 years
  • Fewer sick days
    • Employees can schedule doctor’s appointments during the week rather than miss work
    • With fewer employees, startups can’t afford to lose any of them to illness
  • Increased recruiting ability
    • Working adults willing to give up at least part of their salary for increased work flexibility: 2 in 5
    • A shorter work week can make it easier for startups to attract the perfect talent
  • Energy savings
    • The state of Utah switched to a shorter work week and cut energy costs by 13%
    • Startups typically operate on thin budgets
      • Keeping costs low will help keep them moving forward
  • Happier employees
    • Long weekends make employees happy, and happy employees:
      • Are 33% more profitable
      • Are 43% more productive
      • Cause 50% fewer safety incidents
  • Lower environmental impact
    • Fewer cars on the roads lead to:
      • Reduced consumption of fossil fuels
      • A smaller impact on global climate change
    • Startups that care about the environment can benefit from a PR boost

“The harder we crowd business for time, the more efficient it becomes.” — Henry Ford

Dating from the 1920s, these timepieces surprise and appeal for their light-hearted aspects: chatelaines that take on the appearance of jewels, flowers and stone-studded leaves that rise to reveal a dial. These elegant and inventive pieces enabled their wearers to tell the time with discretion, in accordance with the customs of the era. Today, the Maison breathes new life into this game of hide and seek and offers a secret space to each second. Sliding open an invisible drawer or raising a precious tassel evoke a personal sense of time, alive with intimate memories.

For jewelry watches collections, there are Sweet Charms Pavée watches, Snowflake and Snowflake Fleurette High Jewelry watches, Pompon transformable long necklaces, and Rubis Secret bracelet watch.

For Poetic Complications™ collections, there are Lady Jour des Fleurs and Lady Nuit des Papillons watches, Lady Arpels Jour Nuit Fée Ondine watch, Lady Arpels Ronde des Papillons watch, and Midnight Nuit Lumineusewatch

Each creation associates technical prowess, creative research and a sense of wonder. Time is measured over the course of a day, a night or a ballet of butterflies. In bringing to life a ballet of butterflies, a swallow or a graceful fairy, the Maison has deployed unbounded creativity to reinvent the Poetry of Time™, charged with enchantment and emotion.

How Einstein Started

How Einstein Started

Einstein’s start in life, if boiled down to a formula, would be something like this:

Tinkering with a compass + contempt for school and authority + thought experiments + having an office next to a clock tower and a train station + a government job with a boss who turned a blind eye to what he did at work = genius.

Thinking Visually

There is more to it, according to Walter Isaacson, the biographer, Einstein was an obsessive reader. There was a school that practiced a new teaching method – a visual thinking method. There was a lover,  the only female physics student, who became a sounding board for Einstein’s early work. There was an uncle who was an electrical engineer, letting Einstein ticker with lights.  And another rich uncle in Belgium who was certain Albert was a prodigy ever since he was a kid.

How Einstein Really Started – A Thought Experiment

But what was at the beginning of it all? According to Walter Isaacson’s book, it was a compass. A five-year old Albert was lying in bed sick when his father brought him a compass to play with. Albert asked how it worked. No, just saying that compasses work because of Earth’s magnetic field was not enough. He wanted to know how it really worked.  He wanted to visualize it.

Since that encounter with a compass, and many books later, there was one book that especially stuck Albert’s imagination. So much that he started visualizing in his head everything he read in it. This book was People’s Book on Natural Science. The author specifically asked his reader to take an imaginary trip through space. And Einstein did. At 15, while walking around Italian countryside, he first imagined what it would be like to ride along a beam of light. That was his first thought experiment, one of many more that would later make him who he became.

About his thought experiments, Einstein famously said:

The true sign of intelligence is not knowledge but imagination.

How Mark Zuckerberg Started

How Mark Zuckerberg Started

How Mark Zuckerberg really started is not how the movie The Social Network showed it.

Mark Zuckerberg meets a computer

His father, although not an engineer, was an early computer enthusiast. Running a dental office he had a vision that computers would change the way people communicate. But for the time being he used them for taking scanning people’s mouths. At age 10 Mark was bored with school. His father noticed and introduced him to his Altair computer. Together they wrote a program that connected the computer at home with the computer in the office. They called it “ZuckNet.” It alerted doctor Z, as he is known, when a patient arrived. It worked better than having the receptionist yell, “Patient here!”

Mark Zuckerberg starts hacking

Mark quickly learned everything his father knew about computers. He started studying with a tutor. Then he started taking a college class in computer science while still in middle school. He read books. But he really started learning to code when he transferred to a private school where he met a programming whiz kid Adam D’Angelo. Together they started hacking. They made an artificially intelligent music player that learned the user’s music taste. Soon Microsoft found out about it and offered money and a job. Zuckerberg was not interested.

There is a running theme in how Mark Zuckerberg started. He would be offered millions and even billions at least 11 times since then, and every time he walked away. He might have a bigger plan every time.

Do Most Great Entrepreneurs Focus on 1 Idea or Pursue Many?

Do Most Great Entrepreneurs Focus on 1 Idea or Pursue Many?

Do most great entrepreneurs focus on one idea or pursue many? A quick look at billionaire entrepreneurs reveals that most of them are serial entrepreneurs.

serial-entrepreneurs-how-to-pursue-multiple-opportunities-infographic

Source: Anna Vital.  Funders and Founders.com

Entrepreneurs are known for being able to focus on one thing to the point of making it a reality. Entrepreneurs are also known for their ability to recognize business opportunities when they come. These two qualities can be at odds with each other: focusing on one thing while looking around for more opportunities contradicts itself.

For many new entrepreneurs there is a real dilemma here. Should you start a lot of companies, or should you focus your whole life on one, like Zuckerberg?

To answer this question, we collected data on world’s top-earning entrepreneurs – the self-made billionaires who made money through starting companies. This year, there are 1426 billionaires in the world, according to Forbes. 960 of them are self-made, while the rest inherited their wealth. We focused on the business history of the 960 to figure out how they made their money. Specifically, did these billionaires make it from a single business, or multiple ones. After crunching the numbers we found that 830 of them made money from more than one business, while 130 derive their wealth from one business.
At the very least, it means that most of the top earning entrepreneurs in the world are serial entrepreneurs, having made money from two or more different businesses.
But what do we mean by “different” business?

How different of a business have these people done? We found the business ventures of the top five entrepreneurs with the most diverse backgrounds. As you look at their histories, you start seeing how they looked for opportunity but didn’t necessarily have a clear billion-dollar plan from the start.

How We Got Data on Serial Entrepreneurs

We analyzed profiles from Forbes Billionaires list and found self-made billionaires, who made money from multiple sources. From there we found entrepreneurs with the highest number of venture who are also the most popular as measured by Google Trends. We carefully analyzed the biographies of each billionaire-entrepreneur to compose a timeline of his ventures. For Richard Branson, to save space, we took only the most popular ventures, as the total number is 400 (according to Richard Branson Timeline of Ventures on Wikipedia). We also clustered very similar transactions as one venture.

The point at which each entrepreneur achieved a billionaire status is approximate. We used data from acquisitions of private companies, public offerings, and major stock price increases to gauge the time when these entrepreneurs hit the one billion milestone:

  • Sheldon Adelson became a billionaire after building a casino in Macau, China, and taking the company public. This transaction alone increased his wealth 14 times making him the third-richest American at the time.
  • Eric Lefkofsky owned 22% of Groupon at the time it went public at $12.8 billion valuation. Thus Lefkofsky’s net worth was over $2 billion.
  • Mark Cuban was one of the co-founders of Broadcast.com, acquired by Yahoo! for $5.6 billion, a transaction that most likely made him a billionaire. In 2011, Cuban was No. 459 on Forbes Billionaire list, with a net worth of $2.3 billion.
  • Elon Musk first became prominent as one of the co-founders of PayPal. When PayPal was sold to eBay for $1.5 billion, Musk owned 11.2% of the company, making him a multi-millionaire. He later became a billionaire, when the stock of Tesla Motors, a company he took public in 2010, rose 3 times. He owns a 32% stake in Tesla, which is valued at $5.82 billion, as of August 2013.
  • Richard Branson most likely became a billionaire from his airline business that includes Virgin Atlantic (founded in 1984), Virgin Australia(former Virgin Blue), and Virgin America. His second major income source was his record business, that he sold for $900 million in 1992.

Bill Gates started out in a highly-educated family. But they were not programmers, not even engineers. Or technical people at all. So how did he start to be a genius hacker?

His father was a lawyer. A very successful one. His mother a teacher. Reading magazines in middle school he first thought about how cool it would be to open a company. You could say that’s how he started – with a childish dream. Many kids have dreams though, so what happened next?

How Bill Gates  Started To Hack

Next, Bill Gates saw a computer at 13. The school he went to bought one machine and a teletype. He paid for the time to use it. When money ran out, he hacked into the computer to use it for free. Then he got banned by the school. Then the school realized he had a rare skill so they asked him to use the computer and help them find bugs. He started to be a hacker.

Started to Hustle

Next, Bill scored 1590 out of 1600 on SAT. He went to Harvard. Only to find himself unsure about where to start – as a pre-law major or as something else? Reading Popular Mechanics one day in college he read an ad about a new computer. He called them to say that he wrote a programming language for it. (He hadn’t.) He asked if they might buy it. He hadn’t even started to write the language. But, he started to be a hustler. And, yes, the computer company was very interested in buying.

Being a Workaholic

Next Bill sat down with his friend Paul from high school, and the two wrote that programming language that he talked about on the phone. Bill wrote 50% of the code, using Harvard’s computers. Bill coded all day long, slept at the computer, woke up and picked up programming exactly where he left off. Bill started to be a workaholic.

Being a Copyright Guru

When they were done, Bill flew to New Mexico to show this new language he had written called BASIC. The computer company bought it for $3,000. But Bill kept the copyright. Did he somehow know it would be worth a lot in the future? So he started to be a copyright guru.

Started to Visualize the Future

Five years later IBM knocked on Bill’s door to see if he had written an operating system they could buy. Bill hadn’t. But he said, “Yes.” Real quick, he found an operating system from another person in Seattle and bought it. With the copyright. Then he sold it to IBM. For a lot more. This was DOS. And without copyright – they never asked for it. “Who would pay for software?” they reasoned. It’s the hardware that people are after. Bill saw the opportunity to make people pay for software. Bill started to see the future. He was now a visionary.

Bill Gates Started to Be a Perfectionist

Then Steve Jobs showed up. He wanted Bill to write new software that was visual. Programs like Excel and Words. Programs that looked human. Bill got down to work. Jobs thought Bill’s team’s product was tasteless, but Bill kept at it. He got better and better until he got really good. Bill started to be a perfectionist.

Being a Visual Thinker

But Bill was not going to spend his life working on Jobs’ brilliant ideas. Ideas, after all, are worthless until executed. Plus, Jobs’ ideas were stolen anyway. And so it was fair game to do the same. Bill remembered where he saw this idea of visual interfaces – it was Xerox. And now he wanted to create a visual operating system of his own. He called it Windows. He started to be a visual thinker.

Being a Tough Cookie

When Jobs heard about Windows, he went ballistic. He lashed out at Bill calling him down to Cupertino. In front of ten Apple employees Jobs accused Gates for robbing Apple. Bill listened calmly and replied that Jobs stole the idea just as he did himself. Bill started to be a tough cookie.

When Windows launched, Bill visualized a world where every home had a computer, and that computer was running Windows. Bill started to become very rich. And as his vision materialized, by 39 he became the richest man in the world.

McCann Milan, making good use of Optical Illusion, created a brilliant ad for non-profit organisation Exodus Fondazione, called the “Reverse Test”, which shows a road sign behind an empty glass, and water is then poured.  As the water level rises, the arrow on the road sign changes direction from right to left!

Google just released a new AI system, TensorFlow, which can be used in everything from speech recognition in the Google app to Smart Reply in Inbox.

Thanks to machine learning, TensorFlow is a highly scalable machine learning system – it can run on a single smartphone or across thousands of computers in datacenters.

Most importantly, Google is open-sourcing TensorFlow to let the machine learning community to exchange ideas.

“There should really be 1 Set of tools that researchers can use to try out their crazy ideas and if those ideas work, they can move them directly to products without having to rewrite code… send code to others located in the other parts of the world.
